A car crash into a gas pump sparked a fire at a gas station on the 5500 block of Connecticut Avenue NW Saturday morning. DC Fire and EMS responded quickly after a “Box Alarm” was triggered.

The gas pump’s emergency shut-off was activated, helping to contain the blaze. Fire crews extinguished the fire without any structural damage to the station.

The driver escaped uninjured, and no other injuries were reported. A hazmat unit responded to manage a fuel spill, and the situation was brought under control.

Immigration officials plan to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, to Uganda after he rejected an offer to be sent to Costa Rica in exchange for staying in jail and pleading guilty to human smuggling charges, according to a Saturday court filing.

Abrego Garcia was released from a Tennessee jail Friday to await trial in Maryland with his family. Hours later, the Department of Homeland Security ordered him to report for deportation Monday.

His case has become a flashpoint in President Trump’s immigration agenda. Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported in March, then returned under court order in June, only to face new smuggling charges. Though a judge granted pretrial release, his lawyers initially kept him in custody out of fear he’d be deported again. A recent Maryland ruling requiring time for defense preparation gave them confidence to secure his release.

The invasive box tree moth has been found in Loudoun County, VA, and Washington County, MD, threatening the region’s widely planted boxwoods. Native to Asia, it spread through Europe, reached Canada in 2018, and entered the U.S. in 2020 via nursery plants.

Experts warn it could be more destructive than the spotted lanternfly, endangering historic landscapes like Mount Vernon and Dumbarton Oaks. Signs include brown foliage, striped caterpillars, and webbing.

Maryland agriculture officials urge residents to report sightings, allow inspections, and safely dispose of infested plants to slow the spread.

Maryland health officials confirmed the state’s first human case of West Nile virus this year. The patient, from central Maryland, is recovering.

In July, mosquito control crews sprayed parts of Hyattsville after detecting the virus in local traps. Health leaders are urging residents to take precautions, such as removing standing water, to reduce mosquito breeding.

West Nile, first seen in the U.S. in 1999, spreads to humans via infected mosquitoes. Most people show no symptoms, but those over 50 or with weakened immune systems face higher risk of severe illness. Common symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.

Last year, Maryland reported 18 cases. This is the first confirmed case in 2025.

EXCEL Academy Public Charter School, one of Prince George’s County’s longest-running charter schools, will not reopen for the 2025–26 school year. The school’s governing board voted on Aug. 21 to surrender its charter, citing financial challenges, declining enrollment, pandemic-related costs, and recent budget changes that disproportionately impacted charter schools.

Founded in 2006 by longtime educator and pastor Denise E. Johnson, EXCEL served as a college-preparatory option for county families. Leaders said they are working with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) to place students in other charter and neighborhood schools and transition staff into district vacancies.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph called the closure “deeply unfortunate,” but said closing now avoids greater disruption. Families will be contacted directly with placement details.

Montgomery County Public Schools will roll out a new “Refrigerator Curriculum” after a Supreme Court ruling requiring opt-outs for LGBTQ+ storybook lessons tied to religious beliefs. Families will get a one-page outline of class topics every nine weeks, along with an opt-out form for alternative lessons.

Superintendent Thomas Taylor admitted the plan adds work but urged parents to engage with diverse ideas. Moms for Liberty praised the change, while LGBTQ+ advocates warned of broader exclusions.

The first outline goes out Monday, ahead of Tuesday’s first full day of school.

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the FIFA World Cup draw will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on December 5 at noon. Joined by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Trump called the event “a tremendous honor” and one of the most anticipated in sports.

Trump joked about renaming the venue the “Trump Kennedy Center” and said Russian President Vladimir Putin might attend. Infantino praised the U.S. for “uniting the world” by hosting the draw.

The announcement comes as Trump continues his federal crime crackdown in D.C., assuring the city will be “one of the safest places on earth” ahead of the international event.

The preliminary hearing for Charles Rucker, 24, accused in the fatal shooting of 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle, has been postponed to Sept. 26. Rucker was originally scheduled to appear in D.C. court Friday morning.

Prosecutors say Rucker walked up behind a parked car on July 5 in Southeast D.C. and fired six shots, striking Honesty in the head as she sat inside with her family. Police believe the shooting was planned, noting Rucker was on the phone moments before opening fire.

Rucker faces charges of first-degree murder while armed. At a prior hearing, a judge described the killing as a “cold-blooded attack,” emphasizing Rucker’s threat to the others in the vehicle.

The reason for the delay was not disclosed.

Support for 2-Year-Old Kyia Newman

Kyia Newman was admitted to Children’s Hospital in D.C. for what was thought to be pneumonia, but it turned into a serious heart condition. On August 11, doctors had to perform CPR for 28 minutes before rushing her into emergency heart surgery.

Right now, Kyia is still in the hospital, unable to breathe on her own and relying on a machine. Her mother, Shaneia (), is a single mom caring for Kyia and her sister, and the medical bills are overwhelming.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been released from Putnam County Jail and is returning to his family in Maryland, his lawyer confirmed to FOX 17 News. A U.S. magistrate judge approved his release Friday as he awaits trial on federal human smuggling charges.

Attorney Sean Hecker called the case a “vindictive attack,” adding that Garcia is grateful for the due process afforded by American courts.
