A South African woman, Racquel Smith, was sentenced to life in prison for selling her daughter to a local healer, who allegedly planned to use the girl’s eyes and skin in a “medicine” ritual. The woman received 20,000 rands (about 1,100 dollars) in exchange for little Joshlin, who has been missing since February 2024.
She was sentenced alongside her partner and a friend for the crime of human trafficking, for which all three received life sentences, plus an additional 10 years for kidnapping.
The case caused such national outrage that the trial had to be held in a sports venue in Saldanha Bay, northwest of Cape Town, to allow public attendance and reflect the massive indignation sparked by the gruesome incident.
