The changing colours of hydrangeas

Mophead hydrangeas are the queens of the shady garden, with their bold, sumptuous flower heads from Christmas onwards...

Fans of hydrangeas have had to make peace with their short flowering span, but not anymore.

There is a new variety that blooms for longer than other hydrangeas and can flower through to autumn.

The flowers change colour as they mature, ending with deep autumn-coloured blooms.

A festive shop… and a chance to win R10 000 vouchers with SPAR’s Elfie on the Shelfie

It’s here. The festive season is so close we can almost taste it. And we headed off to our local SPAR, where the Christmas spirit is high, to stock up on goodies to see us through the season.

SPAR mince pies (don’t forget to leave out a few for Santa on Christmas Eve), the SPAR Bakery Festive Fruit Pudding (rich and nostalgic, with a touch of brandy), and Festive Fruit Cakes (some iced, some plain, some topped with assorted nuts) … the shelves are just groaning with sweet treats.

We found brilliant SPAR Signature Chocolates too, which are fabulous gifts (we tend to do these on a one-for-you, one-for-me basis … they really are too good not to enjoy ourselves). More great gifts for foodie friends… SPAR Signature Collection Wild Blossom Honey, Hot Honey, and Chilli Crunch.

When the party starts and the bubbles flow, we serve the Mixed Berry 100 per cent pressed fruit blend to the children, drivers and non-drinkers … it’s Rudolf-nose-red hued and tastes of good cheer. Talking parties… a charcuterie board always hits the snack brief … we keep a selection of SPAR cheeses, cold meat, pickles and olives on hand, so we can whip up something delish when guests pop in.

And then there’s the main event. The Gammon. SPAR boasts, quite correctly, that their gammon is tender and tasty and is perfect for a Christmas like no other! Those are plenty reasons to pop in to do your festive shop. But there’s one more … and it’s a biggie!
