[𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒] KwaZulu-Natal provincial government business entity and special economic zone (SEZ) operator Dube TradePort Corporation is advancing plans for TradeZone Phase 3, a major expansion aimed at meeting growing demand for light industrial space in the province.

“Targeted construction of enabling infrastructure is set to start in the next 12 to 18 months and is expected to take [about] 24 months, subject to final approvals and [the] continuation of the current strong market interest and pipeline,” Dube TradePort commercial property senior manager Andile Mnguni elaborates.

The expansion comes as manufacturers look for SEZ locations that can derisk operations and provide direct access to export markets.

𝗪𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗡𝗚: Not all the extreme weather events of 2026 are linked directly to the development of what some are calling a ‘𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗻̃𝗼’. However, drought and weakening monsoon rainfall in Asia have been attributed to the phenomenon, which has developed rapidly after the 2025/26 La Niña. The South African Weather Service expects the El Niño to persist through the 2026/27 summer. This has led the Department of Agriculture to warn of below-normal summer rainfall and high temperatures, with potential consequences for crops, livestock and water availability.

[𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄𝐒 𝐍𝐄𝐖𝐒] Electronic control manufacturer CAREL Controls South Africa is working towards compliance with the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act – a regulation that introduces mandatory cybersecurity standards for products that have “digital elements”.

“It is one thing that CAREL Controls has worked on quite aggressively in the last year . . . There’s been a lot of talk on the Cyber Resilience Act, which has essentially been established to strengthen systems and processes and improve resilience against cyberattacks targeting connected equipment,” says CAREL Controls MD Vernon Vandrau.
