Over 6,400 Malawians to be Repatriated from South Africa, Says Embassy Official
A mass repatriation effort is underway to return over 6,400 Malawian nationals from South Africa, following growing fears of anti-immigrant violence. The group, which includes both documented and undocumented individuals, has been sheltering at a temporary camp in Durban .
Adam Ali, a disaster management officer from the Malawi Embassy, confirmed the large-scale operation. He stated that more than 6,400 Malawians are set to be repatriated, a number that has swelled dramatically over the past week as families fled their homes seeking safety .
What began as a small gathering has transformed into a full-scale crisis. The number of Malawians seeking refuge at Sherwood Hall in Durban reportedly jumped from around 2,000 to an estimated 10,000 within days . Many are sleeping in the open or under makeshift shelters, and poor sanitation has raised serious health concerns .
Ali highlighted the difficult conditions, noting the risk of disease as people share limited toilet facilities and struggle to maintain hygiene . His priority, he said, is to get women, children, and pregnant women home safely .
The repatriation is a joint effort between the Malawian and South African governments. While the Malawian government initially facilitated voluntary returns, the South African government has stepped in to expedite the process, which now includes formal deportation procedures for undocumented nationals .
South African authorities have established a court at the Sherwood site to process cases and have provided additional buses to assist with transportation . So far, nearly 1,500 people have been deported, with more awaiting their turn to board buses heading to Malawi via Zimbabwe and Mozambique .
