*"Freedom is Our Responsibility"*
Good morning everyone.
My name is Ikwanam Pato and I here today not just as Miss Role Model Teen Queen 2025, but as a young South African born into freedom.
I never had to stand in those long lines on April 27, 1994. I never lived under apartheid. My generation was handed freedom as a birthright. But standing here today, wearing this sash, reminds me of something important: *freedom isn't just what we were given. It's what we choose to do with it.*
To me, freedom means I can go to school and dream of becoming anything. It means I can use my voice, like I'm doing right now. It means I can look at all of you, boys and girls from different homes, different languages, different stories, and call you my fellow South Africans.
But Madiba didn't walk out of prison so we could sit back. He walked out so we could walk forward.
So as teens, what is our job with this freedom?
Learn:Freedom means nothing if we don't use it to educate ourselves. Read. Ask questions. Know our history, because people fought for us to have books in our hands.
Respect: Freedom for me cannot mean taking away freedom from you. We honor 1994 by treating each other with dignity, online and in person. No bullying, no hate, just ubuntu.
Serve: A role model isn't someone with a crown. It's someone who picks up litter when no one's watching. Who helps a classmate who doesn't understand. Who says "I can make my community better" and then does it.
Freedom Day is not just a public holiday. It's a reminder that we are the daughters and sons of people who refused to give up. So let’s not waste what they won for us.
To my fellow teens: We are the first generation with no memory of apartheid, but we must never forget it. Our freedom was paid for. Now it’s our turn to make it worth the price.
Let’s live in a way that makes Nelson Mandela, our grandparents, and our future children proud.
Happy Freedom Day, South Africa. Thank you
