Motorists can now breathe a sigh of relief as petrol prices have dropped as of 6 August, while diesel and paraffin users will pay the increased prices.
Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP) decreased by 28 cents and Petrol 95 (ULP &LRP) has decreased by 28 cents decrease.

Diesel (0.05% sulphur) has increased by 65 cents and 63 cents increase for Diesel (0.005% sulphur). Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) increased by 32 cents.

“The prices of diesel and paraffin increased due to low stocks in the US, unplanned refinery shutdowns and closures of refineries in the EU [European Union], which have resulted in tight supply.” explained the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.

This means that there isn’t enough stocks available in the US and some refineries have closed permanently in the EU.

The murder case of Disebo Mosupa, an acting youth development officer at Matjhabeng Municipality, has been postponed to September 8 for the appointment of an attorney. Andile Sinyoko (42) and Lawrence Ncanca (37) were arrested in connection with Mosupa's murder and theft. The suspects were remanded in custody.

Mosupa's body was discovered buried at Thabong Cemetery in Welkom after a thorough search by colleagues, police, family, and the community. Her father reported her missing after finding her home ransacked and doors open.
Meanwhile, the Free State Department of Social Development has reiterated its commitment to tackling the escalating crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in the province.

Alarming statistics reveal 1,514 attempted murder incidents against female victims and 14,401 assault cases with intent to do grievous bodily harm were reported in 2023/24.

Kovsie Football unveiled, with high spirits, Mokete Tsotetsi, as their new head coach on 5 August at University of the Free State ahead of this year's Varsity Football Cup.

Tsotetsi has signed a three-year contract with Kovisies Football, becoming the first coach to do so.

The former defender brings wealth of experience in South Africa's top flight football, playing for teams such as Jomo Cosmos, Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic as well as the South African national team.

Speaking at the press conference, Tsotetsi expressed joy being back home. “It feels good to be back home and to give back to the university as this is my second home.”

With the Varsity Football Cup just days away, Tsotetsi expects a tough challenge, as he will be working with a completely new team, with the majority of the squad that played last year, moving on after completing their studies.

“It's challenging for any coach to work with a team that you didn’t select but that’s sport for you, very challenging. But I trust my technical team and I believe we will do a good job.”

He furthermore added that he has had a practice session with the team and identified the team’s strengths as well as their challenges. "Most of them don't have height, but they are very quick. So the aim will be to keep the ball on the ground. But we won't play one-dimension football," said Tsotetsi.

UFS Men's Football will begin their campaign with a trip to Pretoria, where they will play Tuks Men's Football on Thursday, 7 August. Kick-Off is at 19:15.

𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐔𝐃𝐈𝐓 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐌𝐄𝐂 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐔𝐌𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐃𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓

MEC for the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) in the Free State has received with great joy the clean audit report for his department from the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) for the 2024/25 financial year.

MEC Ketso Makume expressed that this report comes after years of hard work, improvement, planning and implementation of the recommendations and directives from the Auditor-General. He furthermore said that his department has improved from the unqualified report they received in the 2023/24 financial year.

Makume said that this shows they were determined to improve their financial statements and put into action the advices that the department received from the previous audits. "Meeting the standards of AGSA clearly shows that we developed and implemented strong action plans to fix issues raised in previous audits,” said the MEC.

“This report proves the department’s commitment to good governance and professionalism.” said Makume.

It is with deep sadness that Siwelele FC confirms the passing of beloved Club Official, Earl Davids, who tragically lost his life in a car accident early Monday morning.

Also traveling in the vehicle were Head of Marketing, Didi Masoetsa, and driver Pedro Nxusa, who have both been taken to hospital for medical assessment.

Earl was a celebrated talent in the graphic design industry, known for his passion, precision, and unwavering dedication to his craft. Over the years, he worked with top-tier brands including Vodacom and Richard Branson, yet remained humble and grounded. His creative genius led to the design of the official Siwelele FC logo, a symbol that will now forever carry part of his legacy.

Club Chairman Calvin Le John shared heartfelt words:

“We express our deepest condolences to the Davids family. This is a big loss for the club and the industry at large. His birthday was just two weeks away he would have turned 41. Earl was a calm, charming, and down to earth gentleman who gave his all to every project. He will be missed dearly.”

The Davids family and Siwelele FC kindly request privacy as they navigate this painful time.

The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has pledged to launch a thorough internal investigation into allegations of abuse within the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The probe follows allegations that certain individuals, including former ward councillors and a current ward secretary, were earning inflated salaries of R31,691 per month.

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, suspended EPWP funding to the municipality pending a full investigation. The municipality has expressed concern over the suspension, citing its impact on residents who rely on the program for temporary employment and income support.

The investigation's report will be submitted to relevant authorities, including the Premier of the Free State province and the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee of Parliament. Free State political parties have welcomed the probe, with some calling for further action. The municipality has appealed for a fair and consultative process, emphasizing the importance of intergovernmental collaboration in addressing challenges and advancing community well-being.

An 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment for ra**ng a 14-year-old boy by the Virginia Regional Court on 28 July.

According to the South African Police Services (SAPS), the grandmother of the minor reported the incident at Virginia SAP after the victim reported to her, that Kamohelo Motsumi took him to a farm in Virginia and r***d him. “Upon arriving at the farm fields, the accused ordered the 14-year-old victim to undress and lie down on his stomach before proceeding to r**e him.” said SAPS in their statement. The incident occurred on 14 November 2021.

Speaking to the residents of Meloding, Virginia, a 32-year-old man, who wished to remain anonymous, applauded the victim for speaking out. “It must have been so dehumanising for the young boy but I am proud of him for speaking up and shout to the grandmother for believing him and opening the case.”

Lesedi Moletsane commended SAPS on how they handled the case. “It is progressive to see that r**e cases opened by male citizens are taken into consideration and followed through until the end. I am proud of the boy for speaking up and our justice system must continue to fight for other male victims as well.”

City Manager, Sello More revealed before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on COGTA that Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality spent R39 million on overtime, inflated by 62% staff shortage and lack of tools of trade, in the 2023/24 financial year.

Manipulation of pre-approval processes has led to employees working up to 120 overtime hours per person, per month, ghost workers on the payroll, and even prisoners receiving overtime pay.

Following questions about corrective measures the city will implement, More said, "We have introduced a shift system because the hours the workers were working were abnormal. There were times people were working 120 hours. So, when we bring a 4-shift system, it means one shift will take from another. Therefore, it will cap or minimise overtime"

More further stated that the metro has a budget of R61 million allocated to fill vacancies at operational and supervisory level.

"The staff issues have been a major hindrance for Mangaung. The process of filling positions is unfolding and is continuous," he said.

The city claims to have conducted its own investigation into inadequate overtime controls and handed it over to law enforcement agencies.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is urging social media users to stop spreading unverified information related to the kidnapping case of Jerry Boshoga.

Boshoga, who was abducted after a meeting with a business partner, is still missing.

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said, "The SAPS can confirm that the investigation into his kidnapping is still at a very sensitive stage, and the businessman has not been found alive or deceased. We therefore call on all social media users to stop the spread of unverified information."

Misleading reports have inflicted unnecessary distress on Boshoga's family.

Mathe states that the family will be the first to be notified of any progress in the investigation.

A 60-year-old man has been arrested for dealing and possessing drugs after the police got a tip off from the community in Qwaqwa.

The tip led the police to establish a roadblock along R57, where a suspicious white Chevrolet Aveo was stopped and officers discovered 102 suspected narcotics sachets and an undisclosed amount of money.

A further search at the suspect's home uncovered a revolver with its serial number removed, 16 rounds of ammunition, and additional suspected drugs believed to be Nyaope and Crystal M**h.

The suspect has been charged and is expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court today on charges of dealing in drugs, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition.
