FIFA has officially docked points from Bafana Bafana after the team fielded midfielder Teboho Mokoena while he was suspended for accumulated yellow cards in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.
The Mamelodi Sundowns star played in South Africaโs 2-0 victory in Polokwane back in March, despite having picked up two bookings earlier in the campaign, which should have ruled him out.
In a statement, FIFAโs Disciplinary Committee confirmed SAFA breached Article 19 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code and Article 14 of the World Cup preliminary regulations. Mokoena meanwhile, has been handed a warning.
โThe match in question to have been forfeited by the representative team of South Africa by a score of 3-0.โ
As a result, Hugo Broosโ men have been stripped of the three points from that match, with FIFA awarding Lesotho a 3-0 win. The decision sees Benin leapfrog Bafana at the top of Group C, leaving South Africa now chasing qualification with two games left.
Bafana now face a tough finish to the group stage, needing back-to-back wins against Zimbabwe and Rwanda to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Benin, who lead the group, will finish their campaign against Rwanda and Nigeria.
