The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has reached a new one-year wage agreement with the firm responsible for managing the Gautrain, known as Bombela Operating Company.

The agreement, signed on 16 July 2025, will be in effect from 1 July 2025 until 30 June 2026. Among the key highlights of the deal is a 4.25% across-the-board wage increase for employees.

NUMSA also secured several additional benefits for its members, including:

Housing allowance raised from R1,300 to R1,400.

Night work/transport allowance increased from R112 to R125.

Night shift allowance adjusted from R38 to R40 per hour.

Key Performance Indicator (KPI) bonus increased by 4.25%, from R9,600 to R10,016.

The union confirmed that the agreement will be backdated to 1 July, ensuring that employees benefit retroactively.

In a statement, NUMSA expressed satisfaction with the outcome, noting that the agreement was reached under challenging economic conditions, particularly with a low March Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 2.7%. "One of the positives is that all the allowances were increased by more than the general wage hike, which is a significant win for our members," said NUMSA national spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has come under fire from the Sisulu Foundation for Social Justice over the minister's recent statement about state security detecting a potential "coup risks" - a sudden, often violent overthrow of a government - in South Africa.

The foundation has criticised Ntshavheni for downplaying the risk and failing to provide evidence, by stating that it is "deeply irresponsible" and "reckless in the extreme" to claim the country is safe.

"This statement was made in the immediate aftermath of the suspension, on paid leave, of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, a key ally of President Ramaphosa, whose name has become entangled in serial allegations of political interference and suppression of forensic investigations,' said the foundation.

It further asserts that the government is creating division, which undermines both investor confidence and national cohesion, projecting instability.

The foundation is calling on Parliament to take action regarding Ntshavheni's statements, demanding that she either substantiate her claims or retract them.

Residents of Hillside View are growing increasingly concerned about several state-built homes that remain unoccupied. Despite the recent housing handover ceremony attended by Free State MEC Saki Mokoena and Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, some homes are still vacant, raising fears of potential vandalism and criminal activity.

According to Zimasa Mbewu, spokesperson for COGTA and Human Settlements, the department has struggled to locate the intended beneficiaries. Some homes are unoccupied due to beneficiaries passing away, while others have been unlawfully occupied without the department's knowledge.

The department is working to identify rightful heirs and will implement a scheme to deregister title deeds for beneficiaries who fail to occupy their homes. Measures are also being taken to prevent damage and illegal occupation, with the anticorruption unit investigating cases of unlawful occupation and vandalism.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised concerns about the Department of Defence's inability to account for R2.1 billion paid by the National Treasury.

The funds allocated for the South African National Defence Force's deployment in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), seem to be missing.

Soldiers deployed in the DRC are reportedly owed significant amounts, with some owed as much as R600,000 and families are struggling to cope.

According to DA MP Nicholas Gotsell, the DA is demanding that the Minister and Department of Defence be summoned back to Parliament to explain key issues, including the fate of the R813.3 million allocated for employee compensation and the tracking and use of the funds.

The Department of Defence claims that most of the money is paid directly into the soldiers bank accounts, a claim disputed by some members.

Jerry Boshoga, an entrepreneur and farmer from Tshwane was abducted after a meeting with a business partner.

In an interview with SABC published on 17 March 2025, Talitha Boshoga, Jerry's sister, recounted that after returning home from a meeting, Jerry left again, reportedly to view a potential business location with a supposed businessman.

He was then driven by his younger brother, after which he disappeared.

Talitha states that they repeatedly tried calling Jerry, but got no answer. However, after five hours, they received a call from him, which he told them he was kidnapped and a ransom of R60 million was demanded.

The ransom was later reduced to 25 million, and then further reduced to 10 million.

Jerry's family suspects foul play in his kidnapping, partly due to his association with Vusi Cat Matlala, who is currently facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

As the 7 month mark passes, Jerry's family is still pleading with those involved to bring him home.

Nine suspects have been arrested by the South African Police Service (SAPS) for allegedly taking the law into their own hands, following the murder of 32-year-old Sello Mokhele.

According to police, a 30-year-old man walked into Boithuso Police Station on Tuesday, 1 July 2025, to report a case of kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The man claimed that he, along with two others, was kidnapped on Monday, 30 June 2025, by a group of men and taken to the Modder River in the Rustfontein area.

The victims were reportedly stripped naked and severely beaten with bare hands and various objects. While two of the victims were later released and dumped near Botshabelo, Mokhele never returned home.

His family later opened a missing person case at the police station, prompting a joint search operation by members of the Mangaung Metro Crime Combating Unit and Crime Intelligence officers from Selosesha.

Tragically, Mokhele’s body was discovered by police divers in the Modder River.

Following further investigations and a crime intelligence-led operation, nine suspects aged between 25 and 46 were arrested. They face charges of kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and murder.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court soon.
