STP & S T E B U - KNOXMEN - album review
-
The seamless flow of KnoxMen's album is apparent right from the outset, with a nod to WWE legend Ric Flair's opulent lifestyle. Both artists, STP and BlackHood, kick things off with a free-flowing style that interweaves effortlessly, their verses harmonizing in perfect sync.
The album predominantly boasts production by STEBU and features notable appearances by BlackHood's team members, including Kenny K Rsa, Dippy, Dez Melody, and DMT. Not to forget the collaborations with Mamello (from Tears Of Joy), Madam Bad-Bad and the inimitable MARAZA.
The production quality is truly commendable, weaving together an extensive selection of sounds that draw inspiration from vintage records to our very own Amapiano genre. A standout track, "Tsepamisa Maikutlo," cleverly incorporates Amapiano elements, featuring Logdrums in place of the traditional bass instrument.
As the album progresses, it takes an emotional turn with "Homecoming" (the sixth track). Here, the mood shifts to a more serious tone, with the artists reflecting on the experience of returning home when life in a foreign land takes a downturn. STP shares his personal journey on this track, delving into the humility of taking a taxi ride back home.
"TSHWARA MO" carries echoes of 2Pac Shakur's "DO 4 LOVE," with a bassline that pays homage to the legendary classic. Mamello, from Tears of Joy, enriches the track with her vocal prowess, evoking nostalgia for the golden era of kwaito music from years past. The enchanting presence of Madam Bad-Bad is un-ignorable as she graces "BAKER," where her velvety vocals adorn the chorus, infusing the song with a refreshing aura that beckons repeated listens.
STP & STEBU wraps up the album on a positive note with "It's Okay," featuring DMT. The album's meticulous production and compilation ensure it doesn't lean too heavily into the "hip-hop" realm, making it accessible to a diverse range of listeners. Remarkably, explicit language is a rarity here, underscoring the album's cleanliness and unique appeal. KnoxMen is a must-listen and undoubtedly earns its place in the musical archives, making it a standout project for listeners.
