MEC CHILOANE CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AFTER HOËRSKOOL ROODEPOORT PRINCIPAL STABBED DURING LEARNER CLASH

The Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, vehemently condemns violent clashes between learners from West Ridge High School and Hoërskool Roodepoort, which left the Principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort stabbed on her hand while attempting to defuse tensions on Monday, 18 August 2025.

Preliminary reports state that this violence follows an earlier altercation between learners from the two schools on Friday, 15 August 2025, which went viral on social media. On Monday, 18 August 2025, the situation escalated when a group of West Ridge learners, allegedly seeking revenge, went to Hoërskool Roodepoort where they attacked learners and pelted cars with stones.

The Principal of Hoërskool Roodepoort was stabbed while trying to destabilise the situation, and was rushed to hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged. Furthermore, three (3) learners from Hoërskool Roodepoort sustained serious injuries and are receiving the necessary medical care.

About six (6) Grade 12 boy learners from West Ridge High School have been identified and will be served suspension letters today on Tuesday, 19 August 2025, suspending them from school for seven days, pending their appearance before a disciplinary committee. Further suspensions may be effected as the verification of evidence continues.

Our Psycho-Social Support team and employee wellness will visit both schools to provide necessary support.

To enhance security, the Department has engaged SAPS Roodepoort to support both schools and requested them to conduct unannounced search-and-seizure operations.

Bail judgment reserved in viral child 'drug-smoking' video case

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court has reserved judgment in the bail application of one of four accused charged with child abuse and attempted murder after a video of a four-year-old boy allegedly being encouraged to smoke drugs went viral.

The accused, who appeared in court on 31 July 2025, faces charges alongside the child’s mother and two others. While the mother and two of the accused abandoned their bail applications, accused number two sought bail. Judgment has been reserved until 22 August 2025.The defence argued that the accused has cooperated with police and poses no flight risk or threat, pledging adherence to any bail conditions.

However, the state strongly opposed bail, citing the gravity of the charges and disclosing that the accused has a 2018 conviction for drug possession. Prosecutors argued that releasing the accused would not serve the interests of justice.

The disturbing footage shows the child lighting a pipe for his mother to smoke before allegedly being urged to inhale the substance himself, while the other accused were present.

According to NPA regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, the accused were arrested soon after the video circulated.

> “Following the incident, the child was placed in a safe environment for protection,” she confirmed.
