STATEMENT BY THE KWAZULU-NATAL MEC FOR HEALTH, NOMAGUGU SIMELANE, ON THE NORTHDALE HOSPITAL POWER OUTAGE
I noted with grave concern the concerning images circulating on social media depicting Northdale Hospital kitchen staff preparing patients’ meals using firewood outside the facility.
Upon learning of this incident, I immediately requested the senior management to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate situation.
It was established that the hospital was affected by an area-wide electricity outage. While all three backup generators activated as intended, one subsequently malfunctioned, disrupting power to certain sections of the hospital, including the kitchen.
We appreciate the swift efforts of the service provider, who repaired the generator within hours.
However, the decision to cook with firewood outdoors was unacceptable and contravened our stringent food safety and contingency protocols.
The Department has approved measures for such scenarios, including support from nearby hospitals, which should have been followed.
In light of this breach, I have already requested the department to take the necessary disciplinary steps against those responsible for this breach.
We remain unwavering in our commitment to patient welfare and upholding the highest standards of care.
I sincerely thank both patients and staff for their patience and cooperation during this challenging period
Regarding broader infrastructure concerns at Northdale, the appointment of a contractor for roof and other renovations is in progress, with a work set to commence next week.
There is no truth to allegations connecting patient deaths to the power outage. I can confirm that mortuary operations maintained normal functionality throughout the incident.
I want to assure the public that Northdale Hospital remains fully operational, and we are engaging all concerned stakeholders to resolve issues constructively.
The Department reaffirms its commitment to quality healthcare and urges restraint while we address these matters.
