MK PARTY REPORTEDLY FACES FINANCIAL STRAINS AS UNPAID BILLS HIT CAMPAIGN

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is reportedly facing financial difficulties, with unpaid bills and challenges in meeting payments to some workers and service providers.

Reports indicate that the party owes money to several businesses, with some reportedly no longer willing to provide services because of outstanding payments.

The party also reportedly suspended payments for expenses such as travel, accommodation and venues for a period, while some campaign workers are alleged to have gone without their allowances.

The reported financial pressures are now affecting the party’s election campaign. During voter registration, some MK Party supporters reportedly raised concerns about a shortage of campaign materials, including posters, tents and other resources.

A separate report claimed that R336,000 was spent on private security for MK Party Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo in a single month. The party has denied the claim, describing the report as false.

The party’s financial challenges have reportedly intensified following changes to the control of its finances, with reports alleging that former president Jacob Zuma took greater control over financial matters and removed the authority of other officials to sign for funds.

Despite the reported financial difficulties, political analysts believe the MK Party could continue campaigning by relying more heavily on its grassroots support and local structures.

However, limited financial resources could make it more difficult for the party to maintain the same level of campaign activity, logistics and visibility as it approaches the elections.

The MK Party’s reported financial position comes as political parties prepare for an increasingly competitive electoral campaign.

38 ARRESTED IN PILGRIM’S REST ILLEGAL MINING CRACKDOWN

Police have arrested 38 suspects during an operation targeting illegal mining in Pilgrim’s Rest.

The operation, conducted from midnight on 13 September, saw 36 suspects arrested for illegal mining and possession of gold-bearing material and equipment, while two were arrested for alleged Immigration Act violations.

Police seized six 12.5kg bags of gold-bearing material, phendukas, head torches, hammers, iron rods, a pick, chisel and other equipment believed to have been used in illegal mining.

Authorities said the suspects linked to illegal mining are foreign nationals, with the Department of Home Affairs assisting to verify their immigration status.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Pilgrim’s Rest Periodical Court.

Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said police would continue disrupting illegal mining operations and urged communities to provide information to assist in fighting related crime.

BLM AND EDM HOST DDM IMBIZO AT HOKWE VILLAGE

Bushbuckridge Local Municipality (BLM), in partnership with Ehlanzeni District Municipality (EDM), hosted a District Development Model (DDM) Imbizo at the Real Sports Ground in Hokwe Village, Ward 29.

Several government departments and entities, including the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Department of Health, Department of Home Affairs, South African Police Service (SAPS) and Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA), were on site to provide essential services, information and support to residents. Representatives from SASSA, SAPS and Home Affairs also delivered presentations outlining the programmes and services available to the community.

Addressing residents, BLM Executive Mayor, Cllr Sylvia Moroane, expressed concern about the high number of murders experienced in recent months, particularly in the Mkhuhlu area. She indicated that following the deployment of additional police officers to Mkhuhlu, criminal activities appeared to have shifted to the northern parts of Bushbuckridge. She called upon residents to cooperate with law-enforcement agencies by reporting criminal activities and providing information that could assist the police.

The Executive Mayor further assured the community that the municipality remained committed to providing water to all residents of Bushbuckridge. She acknowledged, however, that continued vandalism and theft of water infrastructure—incidents that have occurred almost weekly in recent months—were seriously affecting the municipality’s efforts to provide a reliable water supply. She urged communities to protect public infrastructure and report acts of vandalism and theft.

Nelspruit Flying Squad Recovers R500,000 Prado on the N4

The Nelspruit Flying Squad recovered a Toyota Prado valued at approximately R500,000 during an operation along the N4 near Mbombela.

Police intercepted the SUV while it was travelling towards Komatipoort, raising suspicions that the vehicle was being transported to the Mozambican border for possible smuggling.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the Prado was unregistered, prompting police to seize it for further investigation.

The vehicle was recovered as part of ongoing efforts by law-enforcement agencies to combat vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling along major routes leading to neighbouring countries.

Police investigations are continuing to establish the vehicle's origin, ownership and intended destination.

Two Men Arrested With R1 Million Dagga in Morgenzon

The two men of foreign national, aged 30 and 40, were arrested in Morgenzon on Thursday, 10 September 2026, after police found about 180kg of dagga worth an estimated R1 million.

SAPS Morgenzon and the Secunda Flying Squad stopped a white Volkswagen Golf on the R39 during a crime-combating operation. A search of the vehicle uncovered 21 bags containing dagga.

The suspects were arrested and the dagga confiscated. Police are working with the Department of Home Affairs to verify their immigration status.

They are expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on charges of dealing in dagga.

Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise commended the officers for their teamwork and vowed that police would continue targeting drug-related crime.

Acornhoek Community Demands Action Over Neglected Railway Line

Residents of Acornhoek in the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality have voiced long-standing concerns over the deteriorating condition of the railway line located behind Acornhoek Spar.

The railway area has reportedly gone for years without adequate maintenance, allowing overgrown grass and vegetation to create an unsafe passage, particularly for school learners and elderly residents who use the area.

Community members have also raised allegations of favouritism in the allocation of work opportunities, claiming that some opportunities are being channelled to a select group of self-appointed business people, while little maintenance work is being carried out on the ground.

Residents are calling for an end to what they describe as unfair practices and alleged extortion, and are urging Transnet to prioritise local residents when appointing workers for bush clearing and other maintenance activities.

They believe employing people from the community would not only create much-needed local opportunities but also help restore safety and cleanliness around the railway line.

Transnet has since engaged with the community and taken note of the concerns raised. The company has committed to convening a community meeting in the near future, where it will provide feedback and outline a way forward.

From a troubled past to the political battlefield Skeem G is now asking Ekurhuleni voters for a second chance.

Life can take unexpected turns, and sometimes the person society once condemned becomes the person asking for an opportunity to make a difference.

Themba Lukhele Nzimande, popularly known as Skeem G, was born on the East Rand and lived through a troubled past that included criminal activity.

Today, he says he has turned his life around and wants to use his experience to contribute positively to society and the future of South Africa.

Now, Skeem G has entered the political arena after being selected as Afrika Mayibuye’s mayoral candidate for Ekurhuleni, representing the political party led by Floyd Shivambu, the former EFF deputy president.

His political journey has already raised eyebrows.

Some residents are questioning whether someone with his controversial past should be trusted with the responsibility of running one of South Africa’s biggest metropolitan municipalities.

Others believe that if a person genuinely changes their life, they deserve a second chance to serve society.

The biggest question remains: Can Skeem G fix Ekurhuleni and earn the public’s trust, particularly when it comes to managing taxpayers’ money?

With political parties competing fiercely for control of Ekurhuleni, the ultimate power will not belong to politicians it will belong to the voters.

Residents will decide who they believe can deliver reliable basic services, restore confidence in the municipality and protect public finances.

On 4 November 2026, Ekurhuleni voters will have the final say.
