The Phokeng community in South Africa’s North West province has opened the R13.3 million Maithufi Road and bridge, demonstrating how partnerships between communities, mining companies and government can deliver real impact.

Commissioned by Impala Rustenburg, the project upgraded 660 m of road and built a bridge linking three villages previously cut off during heavy rains. It now improves access for 9,286 households, keeps children in school and created 20 local jobs, with work done by black-owned Badiri Construction.

The project was showcased during the Investing in African Mining Indaba 2026 roadshow, highlighting how inclusive partnerships across the platinum belt can drive sustainable, long-term community development.

Botswana And Ghana Signal A New Direction For Africa’s Mining

Africa’s mining sector is shifting from raw extraction toward local beneficiation, value addition and stronger domestic participation. Countries such as Botswana and Ghana are reforming mining laws to promote citizen ownership, community revenue-sharing and diversification into critical minerals, while still maintaining investor-friendly environments.

These national reforms align with the African Union’s Green Minerals Strategy, which aims to build integrated value chains, support industrialisation and reduce dependence on single commodities. The shift signals not a retreat from foreign investment, but a move toward clearer, more strategic partnerships that link Africa’s mineral wealth to long-term economic development.

BOTSWANA TAPS RUSSIAN CAPITAL TO BOOST MINING SECTOR AND INDUSTRIAL AMBITIONS

Botswana is strengthening its global partnerships by inviting Russian investors to explore opportunities in its diamond industry and rapidly growing rare earth minerals sector. Following high-level talks between Botswana’s Minister of International Relations, Phenyo Butale, and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, discussions focused on integrating Russian expertise and capital into Botswana’s mining value chain.

With a strong reputation for political stability, sound governance, and fiscal transparency, Botswana is positioning itself as a secure and attractive destination for long-term investment. The initiative supports the country’s drive to diversify its extractive economy, expand value addition, and play a bigger role in high-tech and energy-transition supply chains.

Plans to open a Botswana embassy in Moscow further signal deepening diplomatic and trade ties, reinforcing Botswana’s ambition to turn its mineral wealth into sustainable economic growth and global competitiveness.
