"I started hitchhiking as a 14 year old because it was normal in the little town I grew up in. As I got older I became obsessed with theatre and went to study at a university far away. I used to hitchhike the 900kms each way often. While on the road I had a fantasy: setting up a colourful and bright thing on the roadside, some sort of small circus with waving flags that motorists knew they had to stop for, some sort of theatre. The dream was that they would stop for this strange thing, stay awhile, and receive a story that transformed the world they lived in, that made it magic.
Because to me stories are magic.
Over the years of making theatre, TV and film I’ve always been aiming for that unconsciously - creating something you didn’t expect to find that brightens your life, a diamond in the mud under your trudging foot, changing your world forever.
The A MAN OF THE ROAD audiobook is a 10 hour theatre piece, filmed each day from before sunrise (and once at a truck stop at 3am), so that the shifting light bares witness to the story. It’s that roadside theatre, finally real.
The novel itself is a culmination of my 20 years hitchhiking around Southern Africa, and my 20 years living. It’s the tale of a little boy who has to face his fears by hitchhiking all the way across the great country, his goal to find his mother and save her.
Every person he meets is someone I’ve met, and the lessons they teach him are the ones I was taught myself.
A MAN OF THE ROAD explains my own philosophy on life: That the world is a dangerous place over which we have no control. But if we have the courage to put out our thumb, to face our fears and choose a direction, then miracles happen, and we discover that life itself is the reward.
It’s yours to enjoy, free." - .schorr
