Designing the 2023 Hershel Magazine for the second time in a row was great. I was given a little bit of carte blanche to turn the typical “old school” school magazine on its head. No longer an intense copy-heavy read from teachers alone, but instead a picture jam packed full edition with stories and quotes from the students themselves.

FRAMING THE MEMORY OF PAIN

This frame and illustration project is a product of love to say thank you to my back doctor, Dr Wilson, for performing a Rhizotomy on my back. For all of you out there who suffer from back pain, know all too well how it feels when relief comes. My operation was a success and the gratitude I have for Dr Wilson is immense. I had to thank him in some way. An artwork it was to be! So after I completed my graphic illustration, Neil framed it using a chunky square frame with deep relief to allow for the illustration to be slightly raised from the base white mat board.

IT’S ALL IN THE TEXTURE

Shona came to us with this gorgeous multimedia A0 artwork that she fell in love with. Because of the array of texture and the brightness in the artwork we needed to house it in a calming white mat board and a chunky white frame. It was amazing how the pairing just elevated the artwork to another level.

IT’S TIME TO REFLECT!

We got asked to frame 3 more mirrors for our client’s beautiful penthouse apartment, the largest being a gigantic 2m x 2m and the smallest being a 2m x 600mm. To keep with the same look of the first mirror we framed, we used a beautifully bevelled mirror with the same sleek black frame. All the mirrors were constructed with strong wood backing boards with a reinforced structure. We then hung these 30kg monstrosities with the help of many hands, a laser level and an eye for perfection!

WE ARE RUDI GREMELS PHOTOGRAPHY FANS!

And then Rudi came into our lives. Majestically he entered our showroom with his gentle face and man bun, reminding us of Jeremy Loops, and instantaneously he wowed us with his spectacular black and white landscape and portrait photography from his travels around the world. We literally wanted to purchase every single one of his photographs.

Rudi wanted his photograph to be framed in an archival manner. After receiving the top notch A0 print, printed by our good old colleague, Stephen Gibson of Art Assist, we proceeded to frame Rudi’s photograph using a slick, black, square aluminium frame. By creating frame walls with a black mat board we were able to deep-recess the image so that the glass sits away from the image. We used archival foam core backing board to ensure the archival process was completed.

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE A BIT OF BLING!

We have been dying to use our shiny silver aluminium frame. But it takes a very specific artwork to take on the bling! Well Amy’s artwork, a birthday present to her boyfriend, was shouting out to be finished off in this radical frame. The pistachio coloured artwork with a silver grey mat board and delicately floated it on top. Credit to the brilliant artist, Amy’s brother, Michael .sketchbook for creating this tongue-in-cheek caricature.
