SOUND BEFORE WATER | NOW AVAILABLE
(South African edition)

Agustin, originally from the Philippines, has lived in South Africa for 20+ years and has published several books, yet his work here is little known.
Sound Before Water is a rich collection of quietly astonishing poems organised into five sections.
In the simplest language, he inks a duo of vulnerability and steely strength into each poem.
Exile, belonging, homelessness and randomness are some of the topics he touches in these political and personal poems. Survival, the invisibility of threat, the ache of connections to loved ones, to animals and to the elements, are just some of his thematic threads.
Agustin's poetry is direct and lucid, lyrical and sharp, poised and polished. I cannot remember when last I read a collection in which every poem was so affecting.

ATHINA DENNIS - ONS KOM VAN HIER

Finally, the book is in my hands!
What an absolute honour to be featured in this incredible anthology of poems.
Thank you Diana Ferrus-prys for this inspiring opportunity.
Some of my favourites in the collection are “Liewe Moeder deur yours truly, Dis ’n Dag in die Lewe van ’n Onnie” deur Clive Ontong en “Dood. Gewone. Liefde” deur Yuwinn Kraukamp — brilliant pieces of Afri-Kaaps artistry coming together beautifully.
My siel is dankbaar. 💜 If you dont have a copy yet you better get one!

We at Minimal Press would like to wish Harry Owen a very happy birthday. May the year ahead be filled with inspiration, joy, and continued creativity. 🎈🎂

*****

Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape, Harry Owen’s ninth collection, is his most luminous and creative exploration so far of a theme that has always underpinned his poetry – the restorative power of nature, and of Africa in particular.

Comprising more than sixty poems inspired by the superb Eastern Cape of South Africa, Owen’s home for more than thirteen years, Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape is both a celebration of that spectacular province, an appeal for its wealth of natural wonders to be preserved, and a passionate call for us all to recognize ourselves as a vibrant part of the earth’s future.

Outspoken in his commitment to the natural world, Harry Owen is author of eight collections and editor of three anthologies of poetry. Originally from Liverpool, he moved to South Africa’s Eastern Cape from UK in 2008, where he had been appointed the inaugural Poet Laureate for Cheshire in 2003. He has collaborated extensively with photographer Roddy Fox, combining poetry with photographic artistry, sound and video. Their work was the recipient of an Ovation Award at the 2020 National Arts Festival.

Harry now lives in Kylemore, near Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape winelands.
