We at Minimal Press would like to wish Harry Owen a very happy birthday. May the year ahead be filled with inspiration, joy, and continued creativity. 🎈🎂

*****

Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape, Harry Owen’s ninth collection, is his most luminous and creative exploration so far of a theme that has always underpinned his poetry – the restorative power of nature, and of Africa in particular.

Comprising more than sixty poems inspired by the superb Eastern Cape of South Africa, Owen’s home for more than thirteen years, Thicket: shades from the Eastern Cape is both a celebration of that spectacular province, an appeal for its wealth of natural wonders to be preserved, and a passionate call for us all to recognize ourselves as a vibrant part of the earth’s future.

Outspoken in his commitment to the natural world, Harry Owen is author of eight collections and editor of three anthologies of poetry. Originally from Liverpool, he moved to South Africa’s Eastern Cape from UK in 2008, where he had been appointed the inaugural Poet Laureate for Cheshire in 2003. He has collaborated extensively with photographer Roddy Fox, combining poetry with photographic artistry, sound and video. Their work was the recipient of an Ovation Award at the 2020 National Arts Festival.

Harry now lives in Kylemore, near Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape winelands.

COMING THIS MAY from Minimal Press
Shadows in the veld by Jan Weideman

Get ready for a powerful new novel that sweeps across Africa’s rugged heart.

Shadows in the veld is an epic tale of survival, ambition, and transformation set in Africa's harsh, majestic landscapes. Three men—Sefako, Ben, Logan, and others—journey from different worlds to seek fortune and freedom. As their fates intertwine across generations, they battle over land, wealth, and love, forging bonds of fierce loyalty and bitter. rivalry. Amid Africa's untamed beauty, they face greed, resilience, and the harsh realities of life, revealing the continent's promise and peril—a tribute to the human spirit, endurance, and the cost of ambition.

Written by Jan Weideman, who grew up in rural South Africa and brings a lifetime of lived experience to every page, this novel captures the raw, relentless pulse of the continent.

Minimal Press - changing the publishing industry

Minimal Press is a newly established independent publishing company that publishes books based on the quality of the story telling, the literary value, and the prospect of sufficient sales to make each project financially viable. Minimal press covers all expenses involved in the publishing of both print and eBooks. We work closely with our authors throughout the publishing process and in promotion.

Minimal Press offers a new approach with higher percentage returns for authors. We have good distribution throughout South Africa to all leading bookstores, print on demand (POD) distribution in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Furthermore, we have partnered with a translation company to translate our titles, depending whether or not there is a market or that it is profitable, into 15 languages.
