The Importance of Cannabis Education: Science Over Hype, Cannabis education is vital for informed, science-based decisions beyond recreational use. It clarifies medical benefits, like CBD’s role in epilepsy treatment, while debunking myths about unproven cures. Understanding risks—such as dependency or impaired driving—promotes safe use and harm reduction. Education also navigates legal complexities, reduces stigma, and supports equitable access. By grounding choices in evidence from credible sources, we empower individuals to maximize benefits, minimize harms, and foster a responsible cannabis culture.

SACCA has established a platform for private cannabis club owners and stakeholders to work together as a lobby group to ensure the Government passes legislation that will recognize self-regulated clubs to be specifically included in future legislation. Spokesperson Bertie van Jaarsveldt (pictured here) stresses that SACCA’s intention is to provide a foundation for dialogue and action for private clubs without wanting to claim to represent the industry.

The endogenous cannabinoid system, named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.

The CB2 receptor, which is the topic of this article, is one of the two main cannabinoid receptors in the human body, the other being the CB1 receptor. Both receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. While CB1 receptors are primarily found in the central nervous system and are associated with psychoactive effects, CB2 receptors are predominantly located in the peripheral tissues, especially in the immune system, the gastrointestinal tract and your skin.

Humans produce their own cannabinoids, the endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids act on, or stimulate, the cannabinoid receptors. These compounds act in a similar way to phytocannabinoids which also bind to the receptors. The plant cannabinoids are called phytocannabinoids. They are the unique constituents of the cannabis plant. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the main constituents. There are other cannabinoids, but currently far less is known about them.

There are estimated to be well over 100 ‘properly-constituted’ cannabis clubs in South Africa – that is those that have taken legal advice and structured themselves according to the provisions of the Constitutional Court ruling legalizing the private consumption of cannabis, the Constitution itself, which allows freedom of association and the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act which recognizes the right to private consumption.

Government needs to move urgently to deal with the legal ambiguity surrounding private cannabis clubs. That’s according to cannabis advocate Simi Pillay-van Graan, who writes that the concept is a valuable cannabis harms reduction tool, if only Government could see it that way.
