While major labels dominate radio airplay in some of the world’s biggest music markets — including the UK (83%), Germany (82%) and France (60%) — the picture looks very different in Africa.

🇳🇬 In Nigeria, indie artists account for 63% of radio airplay.
🇿🇦 In South Africa, radio airplay is almost evenly split between major labels and independent artists.

These numbers highlight the important role radio continues to play in supporting local, independent music and giving emerging artists access to mainstream audiences.

The data shows that independent music is not only surviving — it’s thriving across South Africa and Africa.
