NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER DENOUNCES FALSE ARREST REPORTS AND CRITICIZES MEDIA TRIAL TACTICS
Today, amidst a whirlwind of media speculation, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms. Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, refutes allegations of her arrest or surrender to authorities in connection to investigations by the NPA.
The frenzy appears to have originated from an unsubstantiated social media post by the Leader of the UDM, Mr. Bantu Holomisa, in the early hours of the morning.
In a scathing response, Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula rebukes Mr. Holomisa for disseminating falsehoods without verifying facts or considering the damage to reputations. She expresses deep concern over the media's inclination to amplify rumors without adequate fact-checking, highlighting a troubling trend that undermines journalistic integrity and subjects individuals to unjust public scrutiny.
Contrary to reports, the Speaker and her family remain at home, untouched by law enforcement since a Search and Seizure operation at her residence on Tuesday, the 19th of March 2024. Today, Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula filed legal papers challenging the validity of the search warrant and demanding full disclosure of case details to mount a robust defense against what she deems groundless accusations.
Emphasizing her right to a fair trial, the Speaker denounces the premature exposure of case particulars to the media, effectively subjecting her to trial by public opinion without recourse for defense.
While on Special Leave from official duties, Speaker Mapisa-Nqakula's legal team pledges to keep the public and media informed of case developments.
