The US$4 million heist at Ecobank in Bulawayo has been revealed to be an inside job, with police confirming that bank employees colluded with the robbers. Investigators say the gang had critical information leaked to them, allowing them to seize cash boxes from two branches in a meticulously planned operation.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated that evidence points to employees leaking operational information to the robbers, saying, "It is clear. We now know they were working with inside people." This revelation has heightened calls for financial institutions to strengthen internal security and safeguard against employee collusion

The robbery, which occurred on October 3, 2024, involved a gang of armed men targeting two Ecobank branches in Bulawayo. They made off with US$3,983,500 from the city centre branch and an additional US$465,500 from the Bradfield branch, totaling US$4,449,000.

Several suspects have been identified, including Simon Xola Ngcobo, Menzeli Mpofu, and Khalid Ntimen, with Bhekani Mlilo, Abraham Temayi Vumbunu, and Elijah Temayi Vumbunu also facing charges. Mlilo was extradited from Botswana and appeared in court, while the Vumbunu brothers were arrested in South Africa and are awaiting extradition

The police investigation has revealed that the gang's inside help may have included information on cash transport schedules and security protocols. Commissioner Nyathi emphasized the need for companies to thoroughly vet employees and prevent insider-related theft, citing similar cases where employees leaked operational information

The Ecobank heist is considered one of Zimbabwe's largest cash heists, and authorities are working to bring all those involved to justice.

A Zimbabwean man, Kudakwashe Mpofu, has been sentenced to jail in South Africa for using a fake permanent resident permit to land a top government job with an annual salary exceeding R1.6 million. Mpofu, who worked as the Chief Financial Officer at the North West Development Corporation (NWDC), admitted to buying the fraudulent permit for R3,000 from a private individual with no connection to the Department of Home Affairs.

Mpofu's fraudulent activities began when he used the fake permit to remain in South Africa after his student visa expired. He quickly rose through the ranks, first becoming an assets manager at NWDC with an annual salary of R900,000, before being promoted to CFO with a salary of R1.63 million.

The investigation, led by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), uncovered several other forged documents in Mpofu's possession, including a Critical/Exceptional Skills Visa, a work permit, and an exemption certificate dated 1996, when he was only five years old. Mpofu also used the fake papers to obtain a South African driver's licence and secure vehicle financing for a Land Rover Sport, BMW 3 Series, and Ford Ranger.

The Mmabatho Regional Court sentenced Mpofu to three years in prison, which may be converted to correctional supervision, and an additional three-year sentence, wholly suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit further fraud or corruption offences.

The case, which was sparked by a 2023 tip-off to the Department of Home Affairs, highlights the ongoing issue of fraudulent visa and permit issuance in South Africa. The SIU's investigation and collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) demonstrate the government's commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring accountability

A Zimbabwean man has scammed a Cape Town car rental company out of a luxury Mercedes-Benz V300 Brabus. The South African police are working with the rental company to recover the stolen vehicle.
