Gift of the Givers Responds to Multiple Informal Settlement Fires Across the Western Cape

Gift of the Givers teams have been activated following multiple informal settlement fires across the Western Cape since the early hours of this morning.
Calls were received from community leaders and affected residents of the Imizamo Yethu Informal Settlement in Hout Bay, where a fire destroyed a number of structures, leaving close to 200 people homeless. Gift of the Givers teams are currently on the ground conducting assessments.

At the same time, our teams were alerted by the Drakenstein Disaster Management Centre to a second fire within a week at the Mbokweni Informal Settlement in Paarl. Teams remain on site to determine the exact number of people affected.

In addition, Gift of the Givers teams are en route to an active fire in Vygieskraal, Manenberg, where backyard dwelling structures are currently alight.

Gift of the Givers will be rendering immediate humanitarian assistance to all three affected fire sites.

Assault case opened after alleged attack at Franschhoek holiday resort:

A family holiday at the popular De Hollandsche Molen Resort in Franschhoek turned into a nightmare on 21 December 2025, when a 19-year-old was allegedly assaulted in what the family claims was a racially motivated attack.

According to the complainant’s account, which has gained widespread attention on social media, the family had been camping at the resort from December 16 to 23 when tensions with other guests escalated into violence. The family alleges that certain campers had been attempting to restrict their movement and access to facilities for years, despite no such restrictions existing in the resort’s official policies.

The situation came to a head when the teenager was allegedly approached, choked, and dragged several meters by another guest. Two younger family members witnessed the attack and sought help, leading to additional confrontations as family members rushed to assist.

Family alleges racially motivated assault at De Hollandsche Molen Resort, Franschhoek. Police investigate while resort implements enhanced security measures after December 21 incident.

A police spokesman put the death toll at five, with 35 wounded. A witness on Wednesday told AFP that eight people were killed.

The bomb went off inside the crowded Al-Adum Juma'at Mosque at Gamboru market in the capital city of Maiduguri, as Muslim faithful gathered for evening prayers around 7:00 pm, according to witnesses and the police.

A 60-year-old woman is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court today, 23 December on a charge of perjury, after she falsely opened a case of robbery at SAPS Cambridge on 14 December.

EAST LONDON – A 60-year-old woman is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court today, 23 December on a charge of perjury, after she falsely opened a case of robbery at SAPS Cambridge on 14 December.

According to police spokesperson Captain Mluleki Mbi, the woman alleged in her affidavit that she was at the Hemmingways Shopping Mall around 10:30, to deposit her rent money, when she was robbed at gunpoint.

“The CCTV footage from the shopping mall did not corroborate her allegation, and she was further questioned. It later transpired that there was never a robbery incident from the outset,” said Mbi.

Buffalo City District Commissioner, Major General Christopher Wright, has issued a stern warning to the public not to report false cases as this diverts critical resources from investigating actual criminal cases.

“If anyone is found guilty of perjury, he or she is liable to a fine or imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years or to both such fine and imprisonment,” said Wright.
