So awesome seeing this breach again, the shear thrill still shudders through my body. I originally filmed this spectacular breach, in the hit zone, off Seal Island, Mossel Bay in 2020 for Discovery’s Shark Week - Air Jaws - Ultimate Breach Off 2020, as DOP for legendary Producer & Director Jeff Kurr. At 15 feet above the water line, it was recorded as the highest Air Jaws shark breach and won gold in the ultimate breach off competition between Chris Fellows, Dr Alison Towner and Dr Enrico Gennari as judged by Dickie Chivel, what an EPIC team! What also made it so special was it was filmed at a time when Great White Shark numbers in Mossel Bay were extremely low and we were unsure we would even be successful getting breaches! So this high flying shark is a great reminder of the lost hey days of the ‘Great flying Whites’. Very cool to see CNN’s 60min using it in their piece “Where Have the Great Whites Gone’ by Anderson Cooper to reference that time.

This beautiful short film show-cases the wonderful work done by the Cart Horse Protection Association's outreach programme in the harsh Tankwa Karoo, South Africa. The programme is facilitated by the amazing people at AfricaBurn Outreach whose commitment to the community of the Tankwa is amazing. The Karretjies mense (carthorse people) of the Tankwa are solely dependant on their carts and donkeys for transport, so keeping them healthy and their bridles and harness in good condition is very important.
The people of the Tankwa are unique and I hope the connection between landscape and characters is felt.
True to Afrikaburn this was a creative collaboration.

AfricaBurn Outreach - Karratjies Mense
Tankwa Karoo - Dec 2025
I love doccie filmmaking for its unpredictability. You start out thinking you know how things will unfold but it’s very seldom they go as planned. But, if you remain true and open to change they invariably go better than you imagined. Like life, right?
In December 2024 I was honoured to film for AfricaBurn Outreach as they conducted a training workshop with the Cart Horse Protection Association for the Karretjies Mense of the Tankwa Karoo focusing on harnessing, bridal work and general care and welfare of their donkeys. Like the harsh climate and landscape of the Tankwa things got off to a rocky start, but slowly like water running through a dry river bed the story started to live and finally blossomed like a carpet of multicoloured vygies which brought tears to our eyes. 
It will be a beautiful film full of compassion, love and hope.

First SKA-Mid dish arrives in South Africa
To work on documenting this, even in a very very small way, is just so awe inspiring. To think that this project will, in the end, change the way we understand the universe blows my mind. And that it's happening right here in South Africa is crazy.
