Rejection

Chapter 3

A box of Twinsavers is given to Cindy to help her wipe her tears inside the police station.

“When you’re ready, Miss, I need you to tell me again exactly what happened. Even the smallest detail would help,” says Sergeant Mathebula.

Cindy squashes the tissue, “We met at Jelo Park around 17:00. Everything was fine; we bought food and drinks before returning to the park. Then he insisted we sit on the western bench, closer to the trees. And when the sun was down, he pulled me deep into the trees and wanted a quickie. But when I resisted and fought him, that’s when he attacked me.”

Cindy looks at Mpumi. “Once he was done hitting me, I found the strength to call my friend and we came here.”

Sergeant Mathebula jots down her statement, “Did he assault you s*xually?”

“No, he didn’t,” Cindy looks down.

“OK. Do you know where he lives?” the sergeant asks.

“Yes, I do! I can show you,” Cindy responds.

Mathebula finishes writing and stands up, “Lets go get him.”

A police van shines blue lights on the face-brick corner house in Mashaba Street. Sergeant Mathebula jumps the black gate and clenches his fist to knock on the front door violently, but nobody opens. A neighbour looks over the wall, and informs the policemen that the family left two hours ago, around 8pm. The police have a last look then return to the van.

“He’s not here, but we will come back tomorrow morning. For now, we’ll take you guys home.” Mathebula starts the car. “Don’t worry, I will find him,” he reassures them and leaves the scene.

Monday morning, Itumeleng jams to deep house on his walk to school and, for the first time ever, everyone pays attention to him as he enters the school. He receives awkward stares, so he takes off his earphones to look around.

He overhears a group of girls near the school tuck shop whispering, “There he is,” as they point at him. And before passing the library, he meets Stacy.

“Did you do it?” she asks him.

Confusion clouds his mind, “Did I do what?”

Sergeant Mathebula creeps up behind him. “Got you!” he grabs Itumeleng and pins him against the wall. “You thought you could run away from the police, heh?” the sergeant takes out his handcuffs.

“What are you talking about? What did I do?” Itumeleng’s head is pressed against the wall.
“Shut up! You’re under arrest for assault. You have the right to remain silent, anything you do or say can be used against you in the court of law.” The sergeant cuffs him in front of everyone at school.

Trashed papers are thrown at Itumeleng, and some pupil spits on his shoe as the sergeant walks him to the van. Cindy and Mpumi are standing next to the van when Itumeleng is apprehended. Itumeleng is shocked to see Cindy sporting a black eye. The sergeant grabs the back of Itumeleng’s head and throws him inside the van, then locks the door. Cindy looks at Itumeleng through the side-grill of the van’s canopy and smiles.

At the police station inside an interrogation room, Itumeleng begins, “I’m going to tell you again, I assaulted no one. I don’t know what happened to her.”

Mathebula slams the table, “Save that for the judge. Weak men like yourself show toughness by abusing women and children. I hate men like you!” Then they take him to a holding cell down the hall.

Time has fled the day, the north star reveals herself and so does darkness. Itumeleng looks out the small window and contemplates how he got there. As more stars reveal themselves, so does the realisation that the link up was indeed a set up.

Rejection

Chapter 2

Pushing the silver button multiple times to summon the elevator, Cindy feels her heart racing. “This cannot be happening. Me, being rejected? No!” she thinks out loud.

The doors open and moments later, she returns to the colourful crowd.

“There you are! Chommie, we’ve been looking for you everywhere; where have you been?” asks Mpumi.

“I’m OK, guys, don’t worry.” She looks at Mpumi and gives her a signal to talk privately, and they retreat to the east wing of the building. “Chommie, you won’t believe what just happened!” Cindy says.

“Tell me! I wanna know every detail.” Mpumi is hyped.

“So I took him to a restroom upstairs for some privacy, right? Chommie, I kissed him and let him feel my cat, I even let him see it. But that bastard wasn’t grateful, he got cold feet and said he couldn’t do it. And when I told him I love him, he bluntly told me he doesn’t.” Cindy breaks down.

Mpumi hugs her, “No, don’t cry over a stupid guy, my friend. He’s a fool to say no to you.”

Cindy sobs.

“Come on, Zala, look around you; there’s plenty of fish to choose from.” Mpumi rubs her back.

“I feel like a fool, chommie,” Cindy’s voice breaks. “What was I even thinking? We all know that he doesn’t date anyone from school.”

Mpumi interjects, “Look, I know it’s difficult. But you can’t let him or anyone else see you defeated. Now pull yourself together and be the hot Slick-c that we all know and love, OK?”

Cindy nods and takes a deep breath, then gets back into character.

Hours later, the exhibition ends. And on their way back to school, Cindy stalks Itumeleng from the backseat with vengeful eyes.

“What are you thinking, love?” Mpumi looks at Itumeleng.

“I want to hurt him twice as hard. I won’t let him get away with it,” Cindy sharpens her focus on him. “He doesn’t know me, I’m going to ruin his life, I swear,” she says, while crossing her fingers.

Saturday morning, Itumeleng receives a text from Cindy.

(Slick-c) Good morning, can we talk? 08:28am.

(Itumeleng ) Yeah sure, what’s up? 08:45am.

(Slick-c) About yesterday, I’m really sorry. I got the wrong idea and took things too far. 08:58am.

(Itumeleng ) Oh that, don’t worry about it, I ain’t mad. 09:06am.

(Slick-c) So, no bad blood? 09:07am.

(Itumeleng ) Nah. 09:07am.

(Slick-c) Cool, but can we link up? I just wanna make peace in person, I promise no shenanigans this time. 09:10am.

(Itumeleng ) Ok, but not today. Maybe tomorrow evening? 09:15am.

(Slick-c) Yeah sure! can’t wait (smiley face emoji) 09:16am.

Sunday evening, Itumeleng steps out to meet Cindy at Jelo Park. They both walk to the Sasol garage, where Cindy buys pies and drinks. They return to the park, and Cindy insists they sit on a bench facing east to avoid direct sunlight.

Cindy breaks the ice, “It’s a beautiful sunset, isn’t it?”

Itumeleng scans the area, “Yeah, it is. I like how the colour complements the leaves on the ground.”

“Stunning…hey, for what it’s worth, I really am sorry.” Cindy opens her Appletiser.

Itumeleng unwraps the BBQ pie, “Like I said…we good,” and takes a bite.

“Thank you. Although I’ve been meaning to ask…why won’t you date anyone from school?” Cindy asks.

“It’s not that I don’t wanna date anyone from school. Just that I cannot decipher what it is that my heart wants any more.” Itumeleng pauses for a moment.

“Damn.” Cindy plays with her straw.

After eating, they shake hands and go their separate ways.

Cindy rests her phone on her ear and Mpumi picks up.

“Hey, is it done?”

Cindy smiles, “Yes, he totally fell for it. You can come now.”

“OK, I’m on my way,” Mpumi drops the call.

The sun goes down, and the stars light up. 15 minutes later, Mpumi arrives.

“Are you sure you wanna do this?”

Cindy breathes heavily, “Let’s do it.” She braces herself as Mpumi swings her best right hook and hits her left eye socket.

“Ouch! not that hard!”

Mpumi holds her mouth, “Askies, does it hurt?”

“What do you think!” Cindy groans. She stands up again, “OK, another one.”

Mpumi jabs her and hurts her nose. Blood covers her mouth and her eye gradually turns darker.
“OK, let’s go to the police,” says Cindy. They hug one another and disappear in the dark.

Rejection

CHAPTER 1

The sky is bright orange, the dawn of a new day. Smiles and laughter fill the front yard of Gifted Secondary School as learners talk excitedly about their career exhibition trip. Itumeleng, flying under the radar as usual, moves around to find a peaceful spot.

Before he can play the new album by Travis Scott, someone approaches him.

“If I didn’t know you, I would say you’re bypassing social contact,” says Stacy, a school-mate beauty.

Itumeleng removes the left side of his headset and replies, “I thrive in my own space, that’s all.”

Stacy looks at him and smiles. “So, am I worthy to step inside your bubble?”

Itumeleng chuckles, “How can I resist an intelligent being? Speaking of which, what’s on your mind?”

Stacy sits next to him and looks at the beautiful sunrise. “I came to find out how you’re doing before we go in.”

Itumeleng locks his phone, “I’m doing pretty well, thanks. It’s Friday, what else can I say?”

“Well, you can ask how I am doing,” Stacy giggles.

He scratches his head, “My bad, how are you, ma’am?”

She looks at him awkwardly, “You know I’m not a teacher, right?”

“Yeah, yeah, but you’re a lady, right?” Itumeleng smiles as he gazes into the distant horizon.

Stacy looks at him in wonderment, “I’m good, thanks.” She stands up. “See you on the other side then,” she says, and vanishes into the crowd.

From a distance, a convoy of two Mercedes-Benz buses declares their arrival. Learners fall in line to mark the register.

“Good morning, Handsome.”

A sweet voice comes from behind Itumeleng. When he turns, he sees two ponytails, styled baby hairs, brushed eyebrows, brown eyes, clear caramel skin, glossy lips, a white matric jacket with olive-green stitching, an olive-green mini-skirt, bright fresh thighs, white socks, and polished toughies.

“Good morning, Cindy,” Itumeleng greets with a warm smile.

“I’ve got a surprise for you today,” Cindy blooms.

Itumeleng turns around, “I hope it’s nothing crazy this time.”

“I make no promises, but I bet you’ll like it,” Cindy giggles.

Itumeleng looks at her with doubtful eyes, “Uhmm.”

“So, no compliment nyana?” Cindy asks.

“My apologies; it’s just that you look amazing every single day. So I thought you already knew that by now,” answers Itumeleng.

“Of course I do.” Cindy then sips Ice Tropez from her 2l Tupperware bottle before passing it to her friends behind her.

Everyone settles in and the buses point their headlights towards Johannesburg.

“Finally, some music.” Itumeleng put son his JBLs.

Soon, they arrive at the Sandton Convention Centre, where the exhibition is being hosted. A collection of 14 buses from seven different schools has arrived. Excitement fills the air, and so does the flexing. Moments later, the learners are welcomed, and the exhibition commences.

During lunchtime, Cindy grabs Itumeleng and leads him to a restroom on the third floor. She pushes him inside a toilet and locks the door.

Itumeleng looks around. “What are we doing here?”

Cindy wastes no time and kisses him. She takes his right hand shoves it deep inside her panties, and whispers into his left ear, “It’s all yours.

” Cindy can’t hold herself back any more as she drops her panties and arches her back.

Itumeleng quickly reads the situation. He steps back to unlock the door and walks out to the basins. He looks out the window and takes a deep breath. He looks at Cindy. “I can’t do this.”

“What!?” Cindy asks, looking at him in the mirror. “You’re joking, right?” She pulls up her panties. “Do you know how many guys would kill to see me naked?”

Itumeleng turns around to wash his hands, “Yes, I know, a lot. Now, please get dressed.”

Cindy puts the rest of her clothes back on. “What kind of man are you?”

Itumeleng fixes his tie. “A strong one. I don’t know what your plan was, but I cannot be bought with s*x, Cindy.”

She gets close to him. “But I love you,” she says.

He grabs her shoulders. “Do you really?” He shakes his head. “But I don’t love you.”

Instantly her face turns sour.“F**k you!” she says, and storms out of the restroom.
