Meet Tom van Greuning ( ) — Broadcast Engineer, Rentals Lead, and the voice that keeps Visual Impact’s projects moving. 🎬
From managing rentals and sales to building bespoke technical setups for major productions, Tom’s been powering Visual Impact’s projects for almost 13 years.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your role at VI.
I’m Thomas van Greuning, but everyone calls me Tom. My role at Visual Impact is pretty broad—I'm part of the rentals project team, manage our e-commerce platform (shopvisuals), handle sales, oversee day-to-day rentals through Current RMS, and work as a Broadcast Engineer. I’ve been with Visual Impact since January 2013, so almost 13 years.
2. What led you into film and broadcast technology?
I’ve always loved the mix of creativity and tech. I studied art and design at school, then moved to the UK after matric, but when that didn’t work out, I came home a bit lost. A friend in the industry said I should try film. He introduced me to my late boss and mentor, Stefan Nell, and that’s how I started at Visual Impact as a nineteen-year-old. I’ve worked my way up ever since.
3. What does a typical day look like?
There’s no such thing as a typical day here. I start with emails, check shopvisuals, chat with clients, and try to land the next big project. What I enjoy most is quoting and building bespoke technical solutions—especially for our more complex jobs.
4. A project that you're especially proud of?
Definitely the Survivor productions. They’re high-pressure, challenging, and a lot of fun. Another standout was a Dutch reality show where we used DMX to create Morse code with lights so contestants could decode clues—one of the more unique technical puzzles we’ve tackled.
5. What sets Visual Impact apart?
Our speciality is Reality TV, and our ability to design tailored solutions for each production. I’m lucky to work with a team that consistently over-delivers and keeps every show running smoothly from start to finish.
