President Cyril Ramaphosa says government is stepping up efforts to tackle illegal immigration through tighter border controls, tougher enforcement of immigration and labour laws, and stronger action against corruption in the immigration system. In a national address this evening, Ramaphosa said undocumented migration places pressure on public services, jobs and security, but warned South Africans against xenophobia and violence. He announced measures including dedicated immigration courts, stricter penalties for employers hiring undocumented workers and moving refugee reception centres to border posts.

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has activated a comprehensive operational plan in response to unrest linked to undocumented migrants in parts of South Africa. The strategy focuses on increased police visibility, rapid deployment capabilities, intelligence-driven operations, and targeted crime-fighting interventions. Authorities are closely monitoring identified hotspots, including the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape.

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane has condemned all forms of criminality, stressing that no circumstances can justify murder, destruction of property, xenophobic attacks, or any other unlawful conduct.

Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile says Operation Prosper will soon enter a targeted anti-gang phase. He made the announcement during Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s oversight visit to crime-affected areas on the Cape Flats. The delegation visited communities including Tafelsig, Lentegeur, and Gugulethu. Operation Prosper was launched earlier this year to combat gang violence. It includes the deployment of SANDF members alongside police officers. Patekile claims that the first phase of the operation has already reduced violence in several hotspots. He describes this as a stabilisation phase focused on visible policing. The next phase will target gang leaders, extortion networks and organised crime financiers. Police are also intensifying intelligence gathering to identify key suspects. Communities remain concerned about mass shootings and violence affecting innocent residents, despite the deployment of the army.

Severe Weather Batters Cape Town as Flooding and Damage Spread Across Metro

Cape Town, South Africa– The City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre has confirmed widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and weather-related incidents across the metro as severe storm conditions continue to batter the region.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell provided a situational update at 11:15am, confirming that several informal settlements have been severely affected by flooding. Areas impacted include **Island, Makhaza, and Monwabisi in Khayelitsha, Imizamo Yethu, Nomzamo, Lwandle, Phola Park, Gugulethu, Valhalla Park, Vygieskraal, Tafelsig, Delft, and Kampies.

Humanitarian relief efforts are currently underway, with hot meals and blankets being distributed to affected residents by partner organisations.

Flooding has also been reported in formal residential areas, including a day care centre in Mitchells Plain** and the corner of Mercury and Galaxy Roads in Rocklands.

Strong winds have caused significant structural damage, with reports of roofs being damaged in Grindal Avenue in Lavender Hill, Gugulethu, Crossroads, Marcus Garvey in Philippi, Portlands, Delft, and Garden Road in Wynberg.

The Vygieskraal Canal in Belgravia has reached full capacity and is now overflowing, raising concerns about additional flooding in surrounding areas.

Several major roads have become hazardous due to flooding and rockfalls. These include **Rosmead Avenue in Wynberg, multiple roads in Mitchells Plain, and Dido Valley Road in the Deep South**. Rockfalls have also been reported along Chapman’s Peak Drive and Ou Kaapse Weg towards Tokai, creating dangerous driving conditions.

Authorities have also received reports of uprooted trees across the metro, from the M3 corridor to Somerset West, with some incidents affecting power lines and causing electricity disruptions.

Tragically, the storm has already claimed one life. A person was killed in Kenilworth after a tree fell onto the vehicle they were travelling in. In a separate incident in Parow, a motorist sustained injuries after a tree collapsed onto their vehicle.

According to the South African Weather Service, the severe weather conditions are expected to continue until tomorrow, with further impacts anticipated as the storm system persists.

The City has warned that, due to safety concerns for municipal staff, some emergency assessments, repair work, and service reinstatements may be delayed until conditions improve.

Residents are urged to remain indoors where possible, avoid flooded roads, and report emergencies through the City’s official disaster management channels.

With two cold fronts expected to bring wet and heavy rainfall across the Western Cape from today into Monday, the provincial Mobility Department is urging road users to exercise extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel where possible. Provincial Traffic Management spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout said that strong winds may also impact vehicle control, requiring motorists to stay alert at all times.

She is also advising pedestrians to prioritise visibility by wearing bright or reflective clothing to reduce the risk of accidents during poor weather conditions.

"Our provincial traffic officers will be monitoring conditions on all key routes, but road safety starts with every road user making responsible decisions. We urge residents to stay informed, plan ahead, and prioritise safety during this April."
