Legendary South African actress and most treasured icon Mam’ Nandi Nyembe has died at the age of 75, her family confirmed her passing.
In a statement, minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzi said, “It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe.
The Nyembe family added: “Our hearts are broken as we share the loss of our beloved mother and grandmother, Nandi Nyembe. To the world, she was a gifted actress; to us, she was our everything. Her love, laughter, and strength will stay with us always. We are so grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support during this time,” stated Jabulani Nyembe, the grandson.
The award-winning actress has been wheelchair-bound due to her deteriorating health. However, her physical limitations have not diminished her passion for acting, and she was eager to continue working.
She shared that her financial struggles began when she spent her savings, approximately R88 000, on her son’s medical treatment. With no financial safety net, Nyembe found herself in a difficult position, with circumstances forcing her to rely on others for support.
