The 12th European Film Festival - South Africa takes place in Cape Town and Johannesburg, from 9 to 19 October 2025, with a smaller curated programme online in Southern Africa.

Participating countries are Belgium/Flanders, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom with films reflecting on the realities of Europe and its place in the world now. National Film and Video Foundation has announced that the feature film, “The Heart Is A Muscle” has been selected as South Africa’s official entry into the 98th Annual Academy Awards (Oscars) for the category, Best International Feature Film.

Written and directed by Imran Hamdulay, “The Heart Is A Muscle” was produced by The Star Film Company’s Adam Thal, P.G.A, Khosie Dali, Brett Michael Innes and Lesley-Ann Brandt

The film starring Keenan Arrison explores bonds between fathers and sons through the lens of inter-generational healing and forgiveness and draws on experiences specific to South Africa’s Cape Flats neighbourhood yet speaks to the universal search for reconciliation and belonging. It traces a man struggling to confront inherited memories and through the slow work of forgiveness, learning how to become the father and husband he longs to be.

Imran says, “The film is very close to my heart. It’s a shared story born from the voices and experiences of the community around it and we’re just so thrilled to have it as South Africa’s entry into the Academy Awards.”

Johannesburg gathers this weekend at Summer Place, Hyde Park for AVIJOZI, the city’s free and open to the public festival for animation, VFX, gaming and film production.

Inside the bustle the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) will kick off a new France - South Africa exchange on AI for animation, VFX, digital arts and gaming, beginning with the AI Masterclass: Demystifying AI for Animation & VFX, which places practice and principle on the same stage.

Front and centre is Dr Sechaba Maape, PhD, PrArch (Wits), founder of Afreetekture. He asks how AI can show African people and places as real - never stereotyped.
