How AIOs Are Choosing Which Content to Cite đ¤
1. Almost Every AIO References Top-Ranked Content
A massive 97% of AI-generated overviews (AIOs) include at least one link from the top 20 Google search results. This tells us that high-ranking pages are still incredibly influential in shaping AI-generated content.
2. They Donât Just Pick One Source
On average, AIOs pull from around five different URLsâall within the top 20 search results. So rather than relying on a single article, AIOs tend to blend insights from multiple high-ranking sources to create a more comprehensive answer.
3. Top 10 Rankings Really Matter
If your page is in the top 10, youâve got a 50% chance of being cited in an AIO. Interestingly, if the AIO only uses three sources, that overlap shoots up to 75%, emphasising the importance of being in those prime spots.
4. The Higher You Rank, the Better Your Odds
Ranking position clearly impacts inclusion. URLs in the #1 spot are cited 54% of the time. But as you go further down the list, that number drops dramaticallyâonly 7% of AIO citations come from position 20.
5. But Ranking Isnât Everything
Hereâs a surprise: over half (51%) of AIO citations come from sources that arenât even in the top 20. This shows that relevance and quality still play a role, and AI may pull in valuable content even if it isnât ranking on the first two pages.
