The Beach Boulevard Business Precinct, with the full support of News Café Blouberg owner Erik, is calling on the Blouberg community to come together this Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil — a warm, community celebration of the spirit that makes Blouberg so special & a collective stand against gun violence in South Africa.
The vigil will take place at Marine Drive Circle (corner Blaauwberg & Porterfield), Blouberg, on Sunday, 31 May 2026, from 17:30 for 17:45 — almost exactly one week since the tragic incident that shook our community and drew national attention.
Rather than allow grief to define Blouberg's story, the Beach Boulevard Business Precinct is choosing a different narrative: one of unity, resilience, warmth & neighbourly pride.
"Blouberg is more than a street or a suburb; it is a community of people who genuinely care for one another," said a spokesperson for the Beach Boulevard Business Precinct. "This Sunday we want to celebrate that. We want the country to see what we know every day, that Blouberg stands together."
News Café owner Erik has given his wholehearted support to the initiative. "The love and solidarity shown by this community has been overwhelming and deeply moving," he said. "We are grateful beyond words."
At the heart of the evening will be a shared 3 minutes of silence — a brief, meaningful pause to remember all those whose lives have been touched by gun violence across South Africa & to recommit to one another as a community.
The vigil is open to everyone; residents, families, businesses & visitors to Blouberg. Attendees are welcome to bring their own candles or tea lights. Candles will also be available on site for those who don’t have. The evening will be warm, reflective & community-led.
