Civil rights organisation AfriForum has entered the Chidimma Adetshina citizenship dispute after a group called Concerned South African Citizens formally requested its intervention on Tuesday 9 September 2026. AfriForum acknowledged the request under case number AFK41089 and said it would do everything within its power to ensure South Africa's migration laws are respected and applied fairly. The case is already before two separate courts with the next date set for February 2027.

*BREAKING: NIGERIA'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SUSPENDS ALL OFFICIAL VISITS TO SOUTH AFRICA OVER XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS*

Nigeria's National Assembly has announced a suspension of all official visits to South Africa, including virtual and online engagements, following continued reports of violence against Nigerians and other African migrants.

The decision was contained in a statement signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on behalf of the Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen on Friday, 11 September 2026.

According to the statement, the National Assembly is gravely concerned by continuing reports of xenophobic attacks, violence, intimidation, destruction of property and hostility directed at Nigerians and other African nationals living in South Africa.

The leadership said it was particularly worried by reports of Nigerians being killed, injured, displaced and forced to abandon their businesses, investments, homes and properties.

The resolution covers all official visits by lawmakers, committees, officials and staff, as well as participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, parliamentary meetings, legislative exchanges and other programmes organised or hosted by South African legislative authorities.

The ban applies to both physical attendance and participation through virtual or online platforms and will remain in force until further notice.

The National Assembly called on the South African government to take urgent and concrete measures to protect Nigerians and other foreign nationals, investigate reported incidents thoroughly, and prosecute perpetrators.
