Mastering those Monday Moments✍️ - 3 August 2026

After working through the morning and afternoon, I was able to complete my first section of the Radnor Landfill Site.
As I've mentioned before, I enjoy seeing the extruded sections so it can be represented appropriately.

Our first submission is due tomorrow along with another two sections.
A great surprise was when my lecturer mentioned a few changes to the submission. I have to admit that I was a bit anxious because I thought I may have to change my entire drawing. In actual fact, there are merely additions to what I have already done.

Those additions include:
✅Hatch patterns of the existing soil.
✅Dashed lines from the x-axis connecting to the soil profile.
✅Contour interval points to be added to each contour interval.

I look forward to completing the rest of the soil sections and showing you the results.

Monday Moments😌 - 3 August 2026

The part you have been waiting for🥁 - Part 2 of Assignment 1 of Construction 2B🎉.
We're kicking off with section A-A and it is the second largest section of the map.

The difference with a section is that, while the horizontal scale stays the same, the vertical scale determines how extruded the drawing may look. In my case, I chose a scale that would express the site topography in a much more dramatic way.
While the horizontal scale remains 1:1000 @ A3, my vertical scale is 1:100 @ A3 layout.

Below is the process I went through to complete my first section.

Flashback Friday📸 - 31 July 2026

Reflecting on our first Construction Drawing 2B class for the semester.
An exciting end to the first week back on campus.
Learning more skills on my way to becoming a fully fledged landscape architect.
This day was one step closer to that ultimate goal.

Although site surveyors have the responsibility of identifying the existing contours of the site, we as landscape architects, should not stray away from learning how it is done. Collaboration with other industries within our career field is good. However, when there is a limited budget, we should be able to take the position of site surveyors in order to get the required information to build upon the site.

Please do not hesitate to browse through the content of our class, as I explain a more in-depth way of how I completed our first AutoCAD tutorial for the 2nd semester of my 2nd year.

It was great learning about site topography as well as having a bit of revision on what we previously learned, in order to keep us updated on the program.

Throwback Thursday🤾 - 30 July 2026

Looking back at the progress I made on this drawing, I can definitely say I'm proud of the learning outcomes, as well as the completed results.

While it took a lot of time, it taught me that great things require patience, especially technical drawings such as this contour base plan.

The most exciting fact I learnt from this drawing:

✅When contours tread over storm water channels, they form sharp v-shaped zigzags before continuing to connect to themselves.
This is mainly drawn on AutoCAD by civil engineers when they form the plans for a road or a highway with a slight depression in the gradient.

I can't wait to start with the sections and show you the results of those drawings.

Way back Wednesday🌀 - 29 July 2026

To start drawing the Radnor Landfill site, I first had to readjust the scale from the slides from an A4 to an A3 in order for it to be at the accurate scale size.
After printing, I got straight to work on the contours.

During the process, I noted:

✅Existing contours are shown in dashed lines
✅Existing features on the site are shown as solid lines, an example would be the concrete channel circulating the landfill area, as well as the existing swale situated on the West site of the site.
✅Contours do not have jagged edges, instead they are smooth and curve back onto the interval.

This process took time, considering that the printed base plan shows the contours in solid lines, I had to break the habit by doing each contour in small dashed lines and smoothing out the contour edges.
Overall, it was an enjoyable experience to create my first contour base plan.
The next process is to indicate the existing section lines and draw them out.

Our first in-person construction lecture lead to an interesting topic: Landforms🗻

A landform is known as a natural feature of the Earth's surface.
How the Earth itself, creates spaces and views, merely from how nature formed it.

We got a refresher of cut and fill, as well as how we can use these methods of landform to mimic nature's work in order to create private spaces, direct attention to certain views and open views.

What we learned from this session:

✅Views can be created by manipulating the surrounding landform by adding soil for elevated platforms or removing soil to create depressions that create intimate spaces.

✅Existing contours are depicted as dashed lines on a plan as well as a section.

✅Proposed contours are represented as solid lines on a plan as well as a section.

✅Adding soil to create platforms against slopes can support and elevate proposed infrastructure such as houses or platforms for views.

Our first assignment is to copy the base plan along with the existing features, such as the swale and the concrete channel. Along with three sections of the Radnor Landfill site.

It's a new semester, a new site and a new me🌱

After our semester break, our class was taken on a site visit to Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in Cape Town.🪴🎍

We were tasked with asking questions about the site, taking in the information our tour guides gave us and observing features within the garden that relate to our profession in landscape architecture.

This site visit was a major callback for me, even though this was my first time visiting, it reminded me of our site analysis of the garden in my first year. The joy of seeing what I used as a reference back then to complete the project, in-person, was on another level.🎉

For this semester, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden will be our new design site for Design Theory 2B.🤩

For Deign Theory, we look beyond the plants that we notice in Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. We look at the geology of the soil, plant ecology, biodiversity, sustainable urban drainage systems and the role the site plays in the carbon cycle.

I'm looking forward to sharing this new journey with you.
