Here’s part 2 of the Valota Farming story!

Find out why trust, clean food and a supportive farming community matter for farmer Sameena Kariel, whose farm is the only certified organic farm in the Philippi Horticultural Area, the vegetable basket of Cape Town.

When customers questioned how Valota could prove that its food was truly organic, Sameena turned to PGS. Through this peer-review system, farmers and consumers review farms together, helping to build trust that food is being grown in line with organic standards.

For Sameena, the commitment is to grow “clean, good food, safe food for everyone”. She sees more people becoming conscious of what they eat, what they put into their bodies and the impact on the environment driving the growing demand for organic food.

We’re looking forward to being there on 18–19 September 2026 at the Harare Botanical Gardens.

The festival is an important space for celebrating Zimbabwe’s food heritage, indigenous seeds, traditional foods and the people and knowledge behind them. It brings together farmers, food producers, organisations, researchers, entrepreneurs and communities to connect, exchange ideas and explore the future of food and farming.

Growing food can also grow opportunity, resilience and stronger communities.

Meet Green Action Week Ambassador Eberechukwu Mercy Okey-Onyema from Nigeria, Executive Director of Healthy Living And Women Empowerment Initiative(HELWEI) (HELWEI).

Through HELWEI's Nurture Together, Nourish Together! project, women in Lagos are using shared sack gardens to grow nutritious food in limited urban spaces, improve household nutrition, strengthen food security and create income opportunities.

As a Green Action Week Ambassador, Eberechukwu hopes to bring organisations and ambassadors across the region together, encourage peer learning and amplify conversations around healthy diets, sustainable consumption and economic justice.

🥦What does it take to get freshly harvested, organic food from a farmer to your community? A lot of planning - and a strong network!
🍅From a garage and three food clubs nearly seven years ago to a network of 57 clubs around South Africa: meet Club Hub.
🍋Through a carefully planned two-week ordering cycle, hosts open their online shops, members order directly and farmers have time to harvest and deliver fresh produce to their local club. The model makes it easier for communities to access local food, including PGS-certified organic produce, while creating a dependable route to market for farmers.
🌻Founded by Jessica Merton, Food Club Hub connects communities with local farmers and the food they grow. Jaime Cooper is the Host of the Vredehoek Food Club Hub and keeps the day-to-day operation moving, working with suppliers and customers alike.
🌶️Together they joyfully share their journey and passion for bringing good affordable organic produce to people. Food Club Hub is a reminder that a fairer food system is built through relationships: between farmers, hosts, communities and the people who buy good food.

AFSA (The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa) is building a movement for agro-ecology and food sovereignty across Africa, reaching more than 200 million people through its network of farmers, pastoralists, Indigenous peoples, women, youth and civil society organisations.

From seeds and land to climate and agro-ecology, AFSA connects local knowledge, movements and solutions to build collective power for change.

Because the future of Africa’s food shouldn't be designed by others, it should be shaped by Africans.

Last week, Mycelium member Dr Vanessa Farr - a core member of the Water Stories team - joined fellow speakers at Living Water: Cape Town’s Sacred Heritage and Shared Future in Kalk Bay.

Hosted by Holy Trinity Anglican Church and St James Catholic Church, the interfaith gathering brought together more than 100 people to reflect on water, climate pressure, access and the living heritage of the False Bay coast.

Vanessa wove ecology with scripture, drawing on the Book of Ezekiel as she traced how water has been captured and managed across Cape Town’s history. Her presentation invited us to recognise water not as a commodity, but as a precious, sacred and shared resource - and to consider how we can safeguard it in its natural state, equitably and collectively.

This is the work at the heart of Water Stories (www.waterstories.co.za): making space for the histories, relationships and community action, alongside and integrated with scientific research, that help us care for water across Cape Town and beyond.

How do you build a shared global campaign while keeping locally led stories, priorities and voices at its heart?

That’s a challenge Mycelium helps tackle through our strategic communications work with Green Action Week, a global campaign built around ‘Sharing Community’.

Our role is to help connect dozens of locally led campaigns into a stronger collective story, without losing what makes each one distinctive.

The result isn’t one centrally designed campaign replicated everywhere. It’s a shared narrative built from many different forms of community action. From seed
sharing and community growing to repair, reuse and collective consumption.
That’s the kind of communications work we believe in: building a strong collective voice while keeping the people doing the work visible.
