The Issue
โStand with Cape Townโs Historic Adderley Street Flower Sellers!
For more than 150 years, flower sellers have traded at Trafalgar Place on Adderley Street.
This vibrant flower market is one of the oldest traditions in Cape Town and an important part of the cityโs cultural heritage. Families have worked here for generations, supplying flowers to residents, businesses, and visitors from around the world.
The City is now proposing a new Informal Trading Plan that would dramatically change the market by:
ย โข Limiting the market to only 20 demarcated trading bays
ย โข Restricting trading hours to 6:00 AM โ 6:00 PM instead of the historic 24-hour trading tradition
ย โข Requiring long-standing flower sellers to apply for permits subject to City approval
ย โข Restructuring the historic market site without guaranteeing existing traders their place
These changes could displace traders, reduce livelihoods, and erase a tradition that has existed since the 1800s.
The Adderley Street Flower Market is not just informal trade. It is a living cultural landmark that makes Cape Town unique.โ
