🎬 Meet the Team: Behind the Lens at Visual Impact & Media Hive 🎬

We’re kicking off a new Q&A series where you’ll get to know the individuals who power our world of film, broadcast, and creative production.

First up: MJ Mgcini, Broadcast Solutions Engineer and Rentals Floor Assistant Manager at Visual Impact Cape Town. With over 12 years at the company, MJ’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and purpose – and it sets the tone for the incredible journeys we’ll be sharing in this series.

My name is MJ Mgcini. Call me MJ. 🙂

What drew you to the industry?
I always knew I’d work in entertainment. At first, I wanted to be a sound engineer, but a visit to my uncle at M-Net in high school changed everything – the machines blew my mind, and I fell in love with TV broadcasting. Around the same time, Yizo-Yizo aired, and I loved how it was shot. After studying IT and Web Development, I found my way to Visual Impact for training, and the rest is history.

What does a typical day look like?
No day is ever the same. At the office, I open up, check things are in order, process gear, and prep for clients. I also run training for interns, clients, and colleagues. On set, I’m a technical engineer. What excites me most is training – sharing knowledge matters to me because I’m here thanks to others who shared theirs.

A standout project?
Definitely IAC Hungary in Nelspruit. The toughest job I’ve ever done, and the toughest for the company too. It pushed us to our limits, but we pulled it off. It was sleepless nights, stress, and lessons learnt, but in the end, success. That project proved I could work anywhere, under any conditions.

What sets Visual Impact apart?
The company’s fluidity, our family-like culture, the range of expertise, and the will to never stop learning. No job is too small. My role? I see the rental floor as the face of the company: where clients collect, drop off, and test gear. Like a root of the tree, I help keep everything stable so clients get the smoothest experience possible.

The Media Hive provides

The Media Hive provides a 120 square meter (1292 square feet) studio, completely soundproof (According to BBC standard).

The Visual Impact Studio has a dressing room, kitchen and full bathroom. The studio comes equipped with Sound Attenuated air conditioning to further improve the soundproof rating.

The studio is a drive-in studio allowing clients to drive a vehicle in to the studio when doing car

commercials or still shoots. The Visual Impact studio is a green screen studio.
