XtraView gives you the ultimate flexibility and allows you to link two or three decoders under the same subscription. This lets you cater for everyone in your family. What’s more – you still only pay one subscription (with an R85 Access Fee for each XtraView decoder).

What’s the catch?

3 way Extra view is only compatible with certain DSTV Decoders.

The first DSTV decoder (Primary) must be an EXPLORA decoder.

You require a “Smart LNB” on the dish.

Your existing cabling infrastucture will need to be added to.

The cost to you depends on your existing infrastructure and home.

Why you should you install 3 new EXPLORA decoders rather than one EXPLORA and two Single view decoders.

Your Monthly subscription for the second and third decoder is the SAME for the Explora as it is for a single view decoder, since the EXPLORA decoder has so many more features (recording, catch up & box office) why would you go for single view decoders?

There is less cabling required if you install three new Latest model EXPLORA decoders, as these decoders can use the satellite cable for the heart beat.

NEW DSTV SATELLITE UP AND RUNNING BY OCTOBER 2016?

Latest letter from Multi Choice.

Dear Sir/Madam
RE: Impact on your Multi-Unit Dwelling DStv installation
Here at MultiChoice, we’re always improving our services and technology to give our customers the best
possible entertainment experience. We will be launching an additional satellite, which will act as a back
up to our current satellite and also give us additional capacity to offer more HD channels and other
services from October 2016.
As you are flagged in our database to have a communal DStv distribution system, we would like to let
you know that you might need to upgrade your DStv distribution system to be able to receive services
from the new satellite.
If you have a single or two cable distribution system (you may have to check with your DStv Accredited
installer to determine if it is), an upgrade may be necessary. We’ve never recommended the use of
these distribution systems, but we are aware of its existence and therefore this communication.
With this in mind, we re-confirm our minimum standards and recommendations for communal DStv
distribution systems, to ensure that you get the best possible DStv viewing experience including access
to services like DStv Catch Up and BoxOffice. We don’t want you to miss out on any of the best
entertainment available.
There are a number of reasons why we ask for certain minimum standards:
Allow you to have the best DStv experience without unnecessary interruptions or missing
services
We want to save you money – installing the most appropriate recommended system, means it
won’t need to be upgraded as and when we add more capacity to our satellite systems
MultiChoice Installation Recommendations
The requirement for any DStv installation, including communal or Multi-Unit Dwelling installations, is that
all four quadrants of the satellite must be independently available at each decoder.
If you’ve confirmed with your installer that your distribution system meets our minimum standards as
below, you can rest assured that you’re ready for the expansion mentioned.
These are common configurations:
Single dish per household
In the case where a living unit can accommodate its own dish, the recommended installation is an 80cm
dish with a DStv Smart LNB:
A single LNB can be used for one non-PVR decoder, but a DStv Smart LNB provides easy
expansion to add more than one decoder through XtraView and is now a requirement for any
installation with an Explora
Most installations using a Twin LNB will require an upgrade to a DStv Smart LNB. The only Twin
LNB installations that will work are stand-alone 2-tuner decoders or single view (non-PVR)
decoders connected in XtraView
Installations with a Quad LNB are fully compatible with the new satellite if used with a DStv
switch – this includes using it in XtraView or with an Explora
Single cable systems
These systems were never officially endorsed by MultiChoice. They require retuning and system
changes to receive new channels and will not be able to carry all the new DStv services.
Two cable systems
These systems will not be able to receive new services on the additional satellite without significant
changes at the reception side and each individual residential unit.
Four and Five cable systems
These systems meet the requirements if all cables (all four quadrants) have been pulled through to each
unit, but will require a DStv Switch per unit to enable XtraView or the use of newer DStv decoders such
as the Explora
IP systems
These are usually found in large commercial installations like hotels and may require changes or
updates (depending on the system) as new DStv services are introduced
Fiber systems
Fiber is the MultiChoice recommended installation for Multi-Unit Dwellings as it will be able to
accommodate all foreseeable future service expansions
Next steps
We urge you to get in touch with your DStv Accredited Installer to discuss what changes are required on
your Multi-Unit Dwelling installation to prepare for the launch of the additional satellite.

Deukom migration update for the layman

OVERVIEW:

Deukom is migrating their Deukom satellite services from the Multi Choice DSTV Satellite to another satellite.

Deukom will no longer be available off the Multi Choice satellite.

Deukom will no longer work on a DSTV decoder.

All current Deukom subscribers should have been informed of this change over by now.

Current Deukom subscribers will receive a new Deukom decoder from Deukom at no cost, however installation is NOT included and is for the clients account. If you are a Deukom subscriber and you have not received your decoder yet URGENTLY contact Deukom to receive your decoder, otherwise you will no longer receive Deukom.

SPECS:

A single LNB (that’s the blob that faces the dish with the cable attached to it.) with a 10.6 LO is preferred, a 10.75 will work but the setting will need to be changed in the decoder, for this reason Mr satellite does not recommend using a 10.75 LNB as the decoder may default back to 10.6 if the decoder hard reboots for any reason. (Just put up the correct LNB from the start to avoid possible problems.)

The current DSTV dish faces approximately East on a compass

The new Deukom dish faces approximately North on a compass.

With Approximately 90 deg angle between the two dishes.

The new Deukom dish faces much higher in the sky.

Therefore the dish must be angled higher for the new satellite than it was for DSTV.

Deukom recommends a 90cm or larger dish for trouble free reception.

The new decoder that Deukom is issuing is a single view High definition decoder, the decoder has HDMI out as well as RCA out but DOES NOT HAVE RF OUT, this is a problem for distributing your Deukom to more than one TV. (Mr Satellite has solutions for this.)

INSTALLATIONS:

It is not advisable to attempt the installation without a professional installer (such as Mr Satellite), as the signal is weak and everything has to be perfect to ensure trouble free viewing. Mr Satellite would not attempt to perform the alignment without using a specialized satellite meter that costs more than R15,000 so if we cannot do it without the expensive meter how will you be able to do it.

(I have done this for 1 client and it is working, I have not had any complaints from client due to small dish, however it is below recommended spec, I do not guarantee performance.)

85cm Aluminium Dish + Std wall Bracket + single LNB +up to 20 m cable + std installation to one TV = R3,000

(No stock. Expect stock late next week), a popular choice that only just falls short of the Deukom spec, recommendation. To date I have had no comeback complaints from clients that have taken this option.

90cm Aluminium Dish (This is a premium quality high end dish) + Std wall Bracket + single LNB +up to 20 m cable + std installation to one TV = R3,500

(No stock. Expect stock late next week) My most popular dish with most clients opting for this option, to ensure that Deukom spec’s are met.)

1m Fibre composite Dish + Std wall Bracket + single LNB +up to 20 m cable + std installation to one TV = R4,000.

(I have installed this dish for one Deukom client that wanted to ensure maximum signal stability, and quality of installation. This dish is primarily used in commercial applications such as block of flats, due to its wind stability, great signal performance and durability. If you want the best dish currently available then this is the dish for you, I do not hold this dish in stock and will have to order it for you, if available.)

PROBLEMS UNCOUNTED SO FAR & SOLUTIONS:

Small Satellite dishes (60cm):

Do not work – Do not use them.

Wrong LNB:

A single LNB with 10.60 LO is preferred, otherwise you have to use non factory settings on decoder which may default back if decoder bombs out or gets a software upgrade

Unable to get signal:

Must have clear unobstructed line of site of the sky in a North direction on compass, if we cannot see the satellite due to trees, mountains, building etc then you will not receive Deukom.

Dish signal OK but no / poor reception at decoder.

The Satellite Deukom signal is week, please ensure you use a top of the range RG6 cable from the dish to the decoder, Mr Satellite recommends SOLID copper core 96 braid RG6 cable (which we charge R10/m for) if you use copper clad or low braid cable you may find signal drops off too quickly and is prone to interference.

Deukom decoder has NO RF OUT and therefore cannot be distributed to other TV’s.:

Mr Satellite has solutions for this.

Mr satellite can convert The RCA signal to RF using a GOOD QUALITY (R1,800) modulator, and then distribute the deukom picture through your exiting multiple TV infrastructure.

Mr Satellite can install a HDMI distribution network around the home ensuring that all TV’s benefit from the High Definition picture that Deukom broadcasts in. Contact us to discuss this solution.

Mr Satellite can use the HDMI port for one TV and the RCA Port for a second TV, contact us to find out how.

Cannot control Deukom from secondary TV, use remote blasters, Mr Satellite does NOT have extra deukom remotes, you will need to get these from Deukom.

Watch SHOWMAX on your DSTV decoder

From 13 June, customers with internet-connected DStv Exploras will be able to access ShowMax, a subscription video on demand service, which offers the biggest library of box sets of the best international and local TV series in Africa – let the binge watching begin!

While DStv offers the freshest local and international content directly from Hollywood, as well as live sport and news, through live television and DStv Catch Up; ShowMax offers complete box sets of previous seasons of series so customers can watch from the very first episode.

Mark Rayner, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa, explained the thinking behind adding ShowMax to the Explora: “Our customers have told us they would like to see the previous seasons of shows that are currently on DStv. Adding ShowMax to the DStv Explora puts the entire history of the best TV shows in one place for you to watch from the very beginning – you see the latest season on DStv, and can binge on previous seasons on ShowMax. For example, the latest season 6 of Game of Thrones is showing now on DStv and DStv Catch Up, whereas previous seasons 1-5 are available as box sets on ShowMax.”

How to get ShowMax on your DStv Explora

The updated software to accommodate ShowMax will be rolled out to all active DStv Exploras over the next week.

Then you’ll need to sign up to ShowMax. Just go to ShowMax.com and sign up - you can even opt for a free trial to see if you like it before you commit.

ShowMax costs R99 per month. Payment is easy and can be done through PayPal, credit card payment or through your DStv account for greater convenience and uninterrupted viewing.

Please be aware though that because it’s streamed content, data usage charges will apply. A high data cap or uncapped data service (streaming at 4 Mbps or higher) is recommended.

NETLIX & SHOWMAX

What is it?

NETFLIX & SHOWMAX are the two most popular online streaming services in South Africa, both offering a VAST catalogue of series and movies on demand. www.netflix.com and www.showmax.com for more information.

What can I watch NETFLIX & SHOWMAX on?

Netflix and Showmax are available on most Samsung smart TV’s

On Windows computers

On iPads and android devices

NETFLIX is available on Apple TV (which is a small black console that attaches to your TV)

So what do you do if you do not have a smart TV but you want to watch NETFLIX on the TV.

First your TV must be high definition and have a HDMI port.

Then you can add an apple TV box, and then watch NETFLIX through the apple TV.



What Internet speed do I need?

The media says a 4 Meg line is fine, but I disagree, if you want a decent sharp image you should have a 10 meg line or faster, remember a 10 meg line won’t always actually give you 10 meg, go to www.speedtest.net/ and do a speed test, as long as you are getting 5 meg or over actual download speed you should be fine.

How much data do I need?

Well that depends on how much streaming you do.

The other month I binge watched and I reached 100 gig in the third week of the month, I’m with Telkom so I just topped up and I was fine again, Data is constantly coming down in price, so just top up when you reach your cap.



How much does it cost?

SHOWMAX basic package costs R100 per month (at time of writing)

NETFLIX depends on how many devices you want to watch it on. NETFLIX price is determined in $ so it depends in the exchange rate but less than R200



How can Mr Satellite help.

First you need to ensure that you have internet of at least a 5 meg line, and then ensure that you are either uncapped or are in a position to use 20gig or more a month, phone Telkom or your internet service provider to ensure the above is in place as we cannot help you with this stage.

Once this in place the Mr Satellite can help in the following ways.

We can set up a simple internet connection to your Smart TV.

Or we can wire up your entire home, providing hard wired internet LAN points as well as WIFI access points as required.

The advantages of having a LAN and WIFI network are far greater than just being able to watch NETFLIX.



How much is this going to cost me?

Depends on what infrastructure you require, we are not the cheapest, we pride ourselves on using quality cable and products and providing bespoke custom top class installations, so we may be a bit more expensive in the short term, but the benefit of you having a top class reliable installation, that’s been done by professional installers will far out way the frustrations that you may experience if you had done it on the cheap.

DStv vs GOtv – prices and channels compared
This is how MultiChoice’s new digital terrestrial television service GOtv compares to DStv Access.

M-Net recently launched GOtv in South Africa, offering a pay-TV service over the country’s digital terrestrial television (DTT) network.
You need a UHF antenna and one of GOtv’s DTT decoders to receive the service, which it said will be on sale for R699.
At launch, GOtv will offer two packages: GOtv Value for R99 per month and GOtv Lite for R45 every 3 months.
GOtv At R99 per month for 12 channels, it costs the same as DStv Access, which has more than double the channels. Moreover, DStv offers flexibility for customers to upgrade to other packages at any time. GOtv will also carry free-to-air digital channels offered by e.tv and the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

But to summarize, GOtv is way too little, and way too late, between the two you must go for DSTV every time.

The only reason I can see why you should choose GOtv is if you can not get a DSTV signal, ie there is a mountain in the way, or you are not allowed to put up a DSTV dish.
