Beloved, God is looking at what people cannot see. **❤️🕊️**
In **1 Samuel 16:1–13**, God sent Samuel to the house of Jesse to anoint one of his sons as the next king of Israel. Samuel looked at Jesse’s sons and naturally focused on what his eyes could see—their appearance, stature, and outward qualities. When he saw Eliab, he thought, **“Surely the LORD’s anointed is before him.”**
But God corrected him: “Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature... for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7 📖
Beloved, hear me: God was not choosing a king based on appearance. He was looking at the heart. God was looking beyond what Samuel could see. 👀❤️
He was looking for faith. 🙏🏽
He was looking for character. 🤍
He was looking for humility. 🕊️
He was looking for a heart that could be taught, corrected, shaped, and brought back to Him. 🙏🏽
People can be impressed by what you look like, what you have achieved, how gifted you are, or how well you present yourself.
But God sees deeper. ❤️
He sees who you are when nobody is watching.
He sees what you do in secret.
He sees how you respond when you are corrected.
He sees whether you trust Him when life does not make sense.
He sees whether your heart is truly surrendered to Him. 🙏🏽
And then there was David.
David was not even in the house. He was out in the field tending the sheep. 🐑
His own father did not initially consider him among the sons who needed to appear before Samuel. But God had considered him. 👑
When David was brought before Samuel, the Lord said: “Arise, anoint him: for this is he.” 🙏🏽
Think about that, beloved. **The person nobody thought needed to be presented was the very person God had chosen.** ❤️
Why? Because God saw something in David that human eyes could not see. 👀🕊️
He saw a heart that could trust Him. 🙏🏽
A heart that could learn.
A heart that could be shaped.
A heart that could be corrected.
A heart that, even after falling, would still run back to God. ❤️🩹🙏🏽
And this is important, beloved: David was not perfect. **David would make serious mistakes.**
He would sin. He would fail. He would make decisions that brought painful consequences.
But one of the things that marked David's life was that he did not want to remain far from God. When he was confronted, he humbled himself. When he sinned, he repented. When he was broken, he cried out to God. When he failed, he ran back to God. 🙏🏽🕊️
That does not excuse his sin. It reveals the posture of his heart. ❤️
And this is where Saul gives us a powerful contrast.
Saul was also an imperfect man. His problem was not simply that he made mistakes. His heart increasingly became resistant to God's instruction.
God gave Saul clear instructions, but Saul disobeyed. And when he was confronted, instead of simply humbling himself before God, he repeatedly tried to defend his actions, explain his disobedience, and shift responsibility.
That is a dangerous heart posture. ⚠️
Because God cannot develop a heart that refuses to be corrected.
David would make mistakes, but when God confronted him, David could come broken before the Lord and acknowledge his sin. He ran back to God. 🙏🏽
The difference was not that David never failed and Saul always failed. Both were imperfect men. The deeper issue was the posture of their hearts toward God. One heart became increasingly resistant to God's instruction. The other, despite terrible failures, remained capable of repentance, humility, and returning to God. 🕊️
Beloved, hear me: God is not looking for perfection. He is looking for surrender. 🙏🏽❤️
He is looking for a heart that says: “Lord, teach me.” “Lord, correct me.” “Lord, change me.” “Lord, when I fall, help me get back up and come back to You.” 🙏🏽
🔥 A teachable heart is precious before God.
And perhaps that is a word for you today.
You may not have everything together today. Your faith may still be growing. Your character may still need refining. You may still have areas where God is correcting you. Do not be discouraged. God can work with a heart that is willing to surrender. 🙏🏽🕊️
God was not looking for a perfect man. He was looking at a heart He could continue to develop. ❤️
The question is not, “Am I perfect?”
The question is: “Is my heart willing to belong to God, obey Him, learn from Him, and return to Him when I fall?” 🙏🏽
Because beloved, God is not as concerned with making you look impressive before people as He is with making your heart pleasing before Him. ❤️
People see the outside. God sees the heart. 👀❤️ People see your present condition. God sees what He can develop in you. People may overlook you because they cannot see what is inside you. But God sees it. And sometimes, the very season where nobody notices you is the season where God is developing what He will use later. 🕊️
Beloved, I want you to remember this: David was not perfect, Saul was not simply “bad,” but the posture of the heart matters—especially whether we are willing to be corrected, shaped, and brought back to God. 🙏🏽
**Do not focus so much on looking right before people that you forget to become right before God.** ❤️🕊️
🙏🏽 PRAYER
Father, thank You that You do not judge me by outward appearance, but You see my heart. Search me and reveal what needs to change. Build my faith. Develop my character. Teach me humility and obedience. Give me a heart that is willing to learn, willing to be corrected, and willing to surrender completely to You. Lord, when I make mistakes, do not let shame keep me away from You. Give me the humility to repent and the courage to run back to You. Keep shaping me into the person You have called me to become. Do not let me become so concerned with how people see me that I forget how You see me. Make my heart pleasing to You. Shape me into the person You have called me to become. Let my greatest desire not be to impress people, but to please You. Make my heart faithful to You in the hidden places, where nobody sees but You. 🙏🏽❤️
