After 30 years, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Gezani Eric Kobane — better known as Penny Penny — one of my most successful recording artists under the Shandel Music label in the 1990s, towards the end of the apartheid era.

Penny’s story is a remarkable example of perseverance and creativity. From working on the mines to becoming the “Shangaan Disco King”, he pioneered a sound that brought Shangaan music into the mainstream.

Today, Penny has built his own media empire, hosts his own television show, and serves as a member of Parliament. I’m deeply proud to have played a small role in the early stages of his extraordinary journey — a true testament to talent, determination, and cultural pride. BTW, that is a crop of hair on top of his head, he has always been well known for his unmistakable image, outlandish fashion style and a true voice of the People.
