August is breeding season for the endangered Western Leopard Toad, meaning these little fellas are much more active but also more at risk. There’s a number of things you can do to help: make your garden toad-friendly, take pictures of any you find and upload them onto iNaturalist (did you know each toad has a unique back pattern?), or volunteer with the Western Leopard Toad Coordinator in your area to help with migration and monitoring.

A toad-friendly garden looks like:
- indigenous vegetation and natural, “messy” parts of your garden (think logs and stones left unmanicured)
- avoiding pesticides and non-natural fertilizers
- low water in the form of small ponds, bird baths, or plant pot bases to provide breeding, soaking, and drinking spaces
- swimming pools that have little steps so toads can escape, and with backwash pipes that flow into the sewerage drains, not into the stormwater system
- coverings on any deep drains
- holes in fences that enable toads to come and go

“This day in our shipwreck and aeronautical wreck history”

1978: Transvaal (pictured), this ex-Navy steam powered frigate was scuttled in Smitswinkel Bay in False Bay in the Western Cape to form an artificial reef after it had reached the end point of its usable life. It forms part of the Smitswinkel Bay wreck route along with the Orotava (1983), Elizabeth (1983), Good Hope (1978), and Rockeater (1972).
