UPDATE: The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) and Mothers4Gaza have voiced their discontent after the management of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden announced that David Scott (The Kiffness), a South African musician and parody artist, is set to perform at Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Scott faces backlash for his allegedly racist and prejudiced remarks regarding the Palestinian struggle. Civil rights organizations expressed that SANBI’s selection of a “pro-Israel public figure” to headline an annual inclusive concert at Kirstenbosch diverges from the institute’s principles of Ubuntu, growth, respect, tolerance, excellence, and accountability. The body of one South African National Defence Force (SANDF) member has been recovered, and another is still missing after they were swept from their vehicle on Christmas Day while they were driving in Macadamia near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.

SANDF spokesperson Mpho Mathebula states that while conducting routine patrol duties, they attempted to cross a heavily flooded river due to recent weather conditions. She says an extensive search and rescue operation for one missing soldier is currently underway.

Israeli forces detained a Palestinian Bedouin shepherd, Eid Zawahra, following his report of armed settlers trespassing on his property. This arrest comes as reports of Israeli settler violence against Palestinian farmers in the West Bank escalate.

According to recent reports, video footage from the scene shows a settler threatening Zawahra, saying, “Do you want a bullet in the head?” Another settler fired a shot into the air.

“Zawahra had called the police more than two hours earlier. He told an Israeli left-wing activist present that officers had not arrived. Israeli military troops later reached the area. They arrested Zawahra, accusing him of stone-throwing,” reported Palestinian media outlet, Quds News Network.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the country’s ports of entry throughout the festive season, aiming to ensure security and uphold the rule of law. In a recent effort, BMA law enforcement officials intercepted more than 80 pairs of Nike sneakers being smuggled into South Africa at the Lebombo Port of Entry in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.

According to authority spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi, these ongoing operations are part of a broader initiative to protect communities from the risks posed by illegal activities and to promote safe, lawful movement across borders.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) is calling on South Africans to support its Lawfare Defence Fund as it faces increasing legal challenges aimed at curbing pro-Palestine activism. To help cover mounting legal costs, the PSC is asking local masajid to dedicate their Jumuah collections on Friday, 26 December to the fund.

“Powerful groups and individuals backing the Israeli government have launched multiple legal cases and interdicts against the PSC and its members. These actions are meant to silence our voices and prevent South Africans from exercising their constitutional right to protest and speak out against injustice,” the PSC said.

“These legal battles have been ongoing for over a year. We’ve been taken to court for boycotting, and it’s crucial that we defend our right to protest, boycott, and express our political conscience. Together with the Muslim Judicial Council, we are urging all mosques on 26 December to support us. Legal counsel costs money, but we will not be silenced.”
