A madrassah in Langa, operating under the Langa Township Projects, has reportedly fallen victim to extortion, with those running the institution allegedly being forced to pay R3,000 for registration and monthly fees of R500 under the threat of violence, according to the Cape Town Ulama Board (CTUB).

In a media statement, the board said the madrassah paid the money out of fear for the safety of its staff and learners. The board further alleged that the institution intended to open a case in the Diep River area amid concerns that members of the Langa police may be complicit in the alleged illegal activities. However, Diep River police reportedly declined to handle the matter.

According to the statement, local activists subsequently raised awareness of the situation, prompting the involvement of the Cape Town Ulama Board.

The Islamic organisation, through its Guardianship Desk, proceeded to Athlone Police Station, accompanied by retired Colonel Dawood Laing, Shaykh Sayed Ridhwaan and Member of Parliament Imraan Moosa, to assist in opening a case.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the suspension of nine senior officers in connection with the controversial R360 million Medicare24 tender awarded in the Tshwane District. Among those suspended are Divisional Commissioner for Technology Management Services, Edith Mavundla, and Acting Deputy National Commissioner for Support Services, Lineo Nkhuoa.

SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the suspensions will remain in place pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings and related investigations.

The Medicare24 contract, awarded in 2024 and subsequently cancelled, has come under scrutiny over alleged procurement irregularities and its reported links to controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
