During the 6th session of the GSSA’s 60th annual congress, five speakers were invited to discuss cultivated pastures and feeding ecology.

Jamie Young, technical seed marketer at Barenbrug, spoke about pasture over-sowing and the use of coated seed technology.

Janke van der Colf, pasture scientist at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, discussed the drivers for improved forage quality in respect of forage herb pasture mixtures under grazing.

Sigrun Ammann, pasture scientist at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, focussed on the biomas of multispecies while
Jane Holliday, a dairy consultant at Intelact, looked at ryegrass, more specifically pasture persistence and pasture management as a link to profitability.

Neil Miles, consulting soil scientist, addressed the importance of nitrogen in optimal pasture production.

Na maandelange samewerking tussen die NGEAC (Nasionale Genetika Uitvoeradvieskomitee, ‘n subkomitee van die Rooivleisprodusente-organisasie of RPO) en die Direktoraat Dieregesondheid by die Nasionale Departement van Landbou (NDA), heers daar groot opgewondenheid in stoetveekringe oor die onlangse suksesvolle uitvoer van 𝘪𝘯 𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘰 bees-embrio’s na Paraguay.

Invoerprotokolle vir die uitvoer van hoogs gesogte Suid-Afrikaanse genetiese materiaal van verskeie groot- en kleinveerasse, is ná die landswye uitbreking van bek-en-klouseer (BEK) in 2021, deur die meeste lande teruggetrek. Suid-Afrikaanse beestelers is egter nou weer positief nadat die NDA daarin geslaag het om dieregesondheidsertifikate vir die uitvoer van bees-embrio’s na Paraguay, suksesvol met hul eweknieë in Paraguay, SENACSA, kon onderhandel.

Seasonal differences in feed production are a given and it is therefore important that livestock producers plan thoroughly for periods when the waning quality of natural pastures can negatively impact animal production.

“While the nutrient content and quality of feed varies throughout the year, a decline is often more noticeable in the summer rainfall areas during autumn, winter, and spring,” says Gideon Jordaan, a grazing specialist from Cradock in the Eastern Cape.

As part of the GSSA’s 60th Annual Congress, many fascinating discussions regarding agriculture arose today.

Susi Vetter of the Department of Botany at Rhodes University, presented research on the effect of drought on communal livestock farmers in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal. She gave an overview of the consequences of drought during and after the fact, and found that smaller herds suffered greater losses. She also suggested long-term changes have to be implemented to combat the effects of “a world with less grass.”

Gina Arena, ecological researcher of Conservation South Africa, provided a synthesis of six decades of grazing science. She presented the Herding for Health Model as a way to link science and practice.

Nyiko Gift Mutileni, an ecologist of ZZ2, spoke of the farmer’s potential to be stewards of biodiversity due to ownership of land.

The Grassland Society of South Africa (GSSA) is hosting their 60th Annual Congress over the next few days. Here are some highlights of discussions concerning agriculture.

Timothy O’Connor spoke of the need to have a holistic systems approach to livestock systems. He compared open systems (roaming) with fenced livestock systems.

Urs Kreuter of the Texas A&M University presented research on measuring adaptive decision-making in livestock grazing systems. The Adaptive Management Index (AMI) helps measure how well adaptive management is being applied. The study found that as AMI scores increased, more connections between different parts of the grazing system could be observed.

Ian Scoones (virtual attendance), the principal investigator of Pastres, spoke about competing narratives for livestock development and policy. He discussed the issue of bad press and negative narratives surrounding livestock, and how alternative narratives could lead to alternative approaches to policy. But, for this to happen, confrontation of bias and misinformation is required.

Over 15% of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (GDARD) budget for 2025/2026 has been earmarked to promote animal health.

This came to light on Sunday when details of GDARD’s budget were shared. The department’s total allocation for the coming year is R671,1 million, of which Veterinary Services has been allocated R104 million. The MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, told members of the media on Sunday that the budget will be used to strengthen internal capacity.
