Casper and Loudine Byleveld, owners of the Nico Botha Boer goat stud near Britstown, made history earlier this year when they sold the most expensive goat ewe ever in South Africa. The ewe was bought for R320 000 by VEA Stud Breeders at the prestigious Black Tie Blue Blood Boer goat auction in Rawsonville, Western Cape. Other ewes from their stud averaged R98 000 at the same auction.

Just two weeks later, they competed at the biennial SA Boer Goat World Show in Bloemfontein, where they again performed exceptionally well – winning, among others, the category for a group of three ewes that hadn’t yet shed any teeth.

The South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC) held their 28th National Carcass Competition outside Pretoria tonight.

Here are some of the high achievers in the meat industry:

Mandla Nkosi of Pig Improvement Company (PIC) was the winner in the SAPPO VMM single and group pork emerging classes as well as the SAPPO-VMM heavy baconer class (81-110kg).

Ellewee van Zyl’s beef carcass from the Desert Beef Carcass Competition was the winner in the beef commercial single category.

RG Crispen’s lamb from the Stella Slaglamkompetisie won the lamb commercial single category.

Nico Muller’s Boer goat carcass from the Agri Moloporivier Smallstock Show won the goat commercial single category.

Nuwe tegnieke is ontwikkel om teeldiere te identifiseer wat die varke van die toekoms kan produseer. Genetiese seleksie op die DNS van varke fokus op hul verwantskappe en potensiaal om nageslag met meerderwaardige genetiese eienskappe te produseer. Een van hierdie tegnieke, wat as metaboliese seleksie bekendstaan, se doelwit is egter om na elke teelvark se totale samestelling te kyk en dit dan saam met genetiese teelwaardes te gebruik.

Die vraag na goeie gehalte varkvleis styg wêreldwyd en wetenskaplike hulpmiddels word aangewend om die vleis nog beter te maak ten opsigte van onder meer kleur, sappigheid en smaaklikheid.
