In South Africa, the Constitution guarantees access to services, justice, and information in all 11 official languages and South African Sign Language (SASL). Precise and culturally sensitive communication is essential to advancing true inclusivity.
As IOL reports, the University of Pretoria is piloting AI-assisted translation of academic abstracts into isiZulu, Sepedi, and Afrikaans, an initiative that expands access to knowledge while strengthening indigenous languages.
However, translation tools can lose trust when cultural nuance and accuracy are overlooked. Even as Google Translate adds more South African languages, ongoing refinement is essential to prevent mistranslations and maintain credibility.
Therefore, accurate translation is not only a courtesy; it is a legal and societal imperative.
