Tshwane Mayor visits property with illegal shacks and R2.2 million bill

Mayor of Tshwane, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, and her team visited a building in Pretoria West where they met a man who claimed to be the owner. He had built over 10 shacks on the property, which he rents out to tenants.

During the visit, the man admitted he couldn't remember the last time he paid his water and electricity bills. A bill produced by the City of Tshwane showed that he owed a total of R2,298,474.19, which was due immediately.

The man has since been served with an eviction notice and has been ordered to vacate the building by 12 July.

Three individuals were also arrested on the property. They are immigrants and were found without passports.

Upon further questioning, the man led the police to a house where more fake notes were discovered together with a machine used to print fake rand and doller notes. Two men who were found in the house were also arrested.

SANDF Members Arrested in Shocking Murder and Kidnapping Case

In a dramatic turn of events, two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been arrested in connection with the murder of a senior Hawks officer and a separate kidnapping incident.

The suspects, aged 36 and 51, were apprehended on Sunday, 22 June 2025, in two separate operations, one at OR Tambo International Airport and another in Centurion. The arrests were carried out by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit alongside the Tactical Operations Management Section.

The arrests are linked to the August 2023 killing of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa, a high-ranking Hawks investigator attached to the Crimes Against the State unit. Mathipa was gunned down while on duty along the N1 near Hammanskraal. After being shot, his vehicle veered off the road and crashed, resulting in his death.

In addition to the murder charges, one of the suspects is believed to be connected to a 2022 kidnapping case involving two foreign nationals. The abduction took place at a shopping mall in Midrand, and investigators have since seized a vehicle believed to have been used in the crime. The car, which belongs to the 36-year-old suspect, is currently undergoing forensic analysis.

The two suspects are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 23 June, where they will face charges of murder and kidnapping. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further arrests.
