Born in Durban in the early 1960s, Gary Rathbone has been making music ever since he was old enough to pick up his parents’ tennis rackets to play air guitar to The Beatles. After moving to Johannesburg in the 1980s, Gary became a fixture on the burgeoning alternative music scene as a member of several notable bands including What Colours?, The Aeroplanes, and The Spectres, co-writing The Spectres’ break-out classic ‘Teddy Bear’, which topped the South African music charts for 13 weeks in 1988.

A multi-instrumentalist, writer and producer, Gary has continued to write and record in the years since the demise of The Spectres and collaborated with various South African musicians including award-winning composer and performer Neill Solomon and indie icon Jim Neversink.

In September 2024, Gary released his latest offering, “Where We End is Where We Begin” and having performed a few shows in and around Gauteng, he’ll now be taking this album on the road, with the Western Cape being his first stop.

"'Taking It Slow' is a late-night conversation with the past—half-lit, restless, and tangled in the weight of distance. Love held too loosely, nights that slip through your fingers, and the slow surrender. Over three years, these songs took shape, tracing the pull between departure and return, between holding on and letting go, of lessons learned too late and memories softened by time.

A slow unravelling, a quiet reckoning, a love letter to the in-between." - Joshua Beaches

On Sunday 30 March, we hosted our first Big Folk Africa show in the beautiful gardens of the Homestead in Hout Bay.

It truly felt like an African Folk experience with 5 amazing singer-songwriters with just their instruments and a story to tell with their songs. Each performer incorporated their home language in their sets as well which made it all the more special, covering English, Tsonga, Afrikaans, Shona and Bemba.

There were a few planned and impromptu colabs on the day as well, which only added to everything.

Thanks to everyone that joined on the day. It might look sunny in some pics but it was touch and go at one point and pretty chilly, so we appreciate the support 🙏❤

Huge thanks to the artists, , , , and for sharing their talents, Penny at the Homestead for the beautiful space and generosity, for welcoming everyone at the door and and for their constant support over the years 🤗

Keep an eye out for the next one!

📷's by Stanley Sibande...except the ones of him, that's his camera but not sure who took the pic 😁
