Wandile Sihlobo recently delivered the 11th Annual Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Lecture at the University of Limpopo.

The theme of his lecture was the role of agriculture in improving rural development. Among other points, he emphasised that the rural economy should not be overlooked in South Africa’s economic growth agenda, which tends to have a strong urban bias in policy discussions.

While 68% of the population now lives in urban areas, rural areas remain a significant segment of society and the economy.

He noted that aside from rural areas’ reliance on remittances and social transfer payments, a defining characteristic of the rural economy is its dependence on a few key, resource-based industries such as agriculture, mining, fishing, tourism, and forestry.
