Informant Shock: “Cat” Matlala Named as Source Behind Police Takedowns and ‘John Wick’ Link Emerges.

In a striking revelation before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, a former elite police investigator has described Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala as a long-time informant, while also linking him to the mysterious alias “John Wick” tied to violent underworld operations.

Testifying under the pseudonym Witness I, the officer spoke via audio only, citing security concerns, and said he knew Matlala from earlier counter-narcotics operations linked to the now-defunct Scorpions unit.

He told the commission Matlala allegedly acted as a source for Tactical Operations Management Section officers, with tip-offs channelled through Captain Felani Zungu that reportedly led to the arrest of several high-risk suspects, including James Nkwana, also known by the nickname John Wick.

Matlala has previously not been formally identified in earlier proceedings as an informant, with most testimony instead focusing on his criminal allegations, including robbery and attempted murder cases that were either withdrawn or led to acquittals.

He is now in custody facing multiple charges as the inquiry continues to probe alleged infiltration of the criminal justice system by organised networks.

The “John Wick” reference continues to raise questions about alleged identities used in past operations and whether informants were double-tasked in covert policing efforts. Presented during testimony week.

Do you think this is true?

BALLISTICS ANALYST RETURNS TO COURT IN BAIL BID
Ballistics analyst Laurence Makgotloe has returned to the Pretoria Magistrate's Court as he continues his fight for bail. Makgotloe is accused of tampering with ballistics reports linked to murder investigations and faces two counts of accessory to murder after the fact, as well as possession of unlicensed ammunition. His legal team argues that any errors in his findings were honest mistakes, a key issue currently under scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission. One of the cases under investigation is the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who was killed in a case of mistaken identity. Makgotloe has denied withholding ballistic evidence from investigators.

GAUTENG CRIME DROPS, BUT KIDNAPPINGS REMAIN A CONCERN
Gauteng has recorded a significant decline in serious crime during the first three months of 2026. Speaking in Kempton Park, Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni said community-reported serious crimes dropped by 5.2 percent, with over 5,000 fewer cases recorded compared to the same period last year. Murder, r**e, carjackings and property-related crimes all showed notable decreases. However, police expressed concern over a rise in kidnappings, which increased by 1.6 percent. Convicted Pa******le Denied Parole in Landmark Western Cape Ruling
Writing
A convicted pa******le has been handed one of the harshest sentences possible in a landmark Western Cape High Court ruling. Leano Vergotine received five life sentences and an additional 78 years behind bars for a series of crimes committed between July and September 2022. The court heard that Vergotine filmed some of the assaults. At the time, he was out on parole after serving 15 years for the r**e of a minor boy in 2009. GBV activist Caroline Peters welcomed the sentence but raised concerns about the parole system, saying the decision to release Vergotine previously placed children at risk. She has called for stronger measures to monitor sexual offenders and protect children from repeat crimes.

Constitutional Court Upholds King Misuzulu’s Recognition

The Constitutional Court has dismissed a final legal challenge against Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, effectively ending efforts to remove him from the throne. The court rejected an application by Prince Mbonisi kaBhekuzulu and other royal family members seeking to overturn an earlier ruling that recognised King Misuzulu as the legitimate AmaZulu monarch. In its judgment, the apex court said no grounds had been presented to justify rescinding its previous decision and ordered that the application be dismissed with costs. The ruling brings an end to a lengthy legal battle over the AmaZulu kingship and strengthens King Misuzulu’s position as the recognised monarch.

SIU Seizes R3 Million Bentley Linked to Tembisa Hospital Tender Fraud Probe
Writing
The Special Investigating Unit has seized a luxury Bentley valued at approximately R3 million, allegedly belonging to tender fraud accused Hangwani Maumela, as part of its ongoing investigation into corruption at Tembisa Hospital.
The SIU obtained a Special Tribunal order authorising the seizure of the vehicle and a second order holding Omar’s Motor Den in contempt of court for allegedly attempting to sell the car despite being instructed not to do so.
Investigators raided the dealership in eMalahleni on Friday and believe money may have exchanged hands in an attempt to dispose of the vehicle. The SIU says evidence suggests the Bentley remained at the dealership while efforts were made to conceal or dissipate assets linked to the case.
The owner of the dealership has since been arrested for contempt of court. Investigations continue.

Government Dismisses Shutdown Claims Amid Anti-Illegal Immigration Protests
Writing
Government says there will be no national shutdown linked to planned anti-illegal immigration protests later this month.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made the remarks during a post-Cabinet briefing on Friday, amid growing concerns over demonstrations and calls for action against illegal immigration.
Ntshavheni stressed that while South Africans have a constitutional right to protest and march, they do not have the right to take the law into their own hands. She warned against any acts of violence or vigilantism.
The minister also revealed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will soon address the nation to outline government's new strategy for managing migration challenges.
Her comments come as some foreign nationals have reportedly left the country due to fears of unrest ahead of planned protests at the end of June.
