A 13-year-old learner has been removed from her parents’ custody and placed in a place of safety as authorities investigate allegations of drug exposure and sexual exploitation in Verulam.

The investigation follows concerns raised at a local primary school, with SAPS, the Department of Social Development and child welfare authorities now involved.

Child protection officials have urged the public not to share the children’s names, photographs or identifying information, stressing that children in such circumstances need protection, support and care.

Government has been given firm 60- and 90-day deadlines to address stalled GBV cases, forensic backlogs and unsafe public spaces.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a four-point intervention following the recent killings of women in and around Ekurhuleni.

The measures include a national case-recovery operation, a plan to reduce forensic backlogs, women’s safety audits by municipalities and a coordinated approach to alcohol-related violence.

Cabinet has wished South Africa’s Class of 2026 well as Grade 12 learners enter the final stretch ahead of the National Senior Certificate examinations.

The 2026 NSC exams will begin on 13 October and conclude on 25 November.

Cabinet is also reminding eligible students to apply for 2027 NSFAS funding before applications close on 18 November 2026.

eThekwini Municipality has ended the outsourcing of its water tanker services after investing approximately R345 million to build its own fleet.

The City currently has 318 operational tankers, with another 43 expected before the end of the year, taking the fleet to 361.

Mayor Cyril Xaba says the tankers remain an interim measure while infrastructure projects are being implemented to improve long-term water supply across eThekwini.
