MOVING COFFIN REMOVED FROM KZN ROADS

An unroadworthy delivery bakkie described as a “moving coffin” has been removed from the road network in Hammarsdale.

The driver was charged after being intercepted by the Operation Shanela team during a roadworthiness operation.

KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma says overloaded and unroadworthy vehicles have been linked to serious crashes and fatalities, and vowed that inspections will continue across the province.

BILLBOARD DISPUTE IN SOWETO

ActionSA has accused the City of Johannesburg of unlawfully removing its billboard in Diepkloof, Soweto.

The party claims the removal was politically motivated and says it is consulting its legal team to determine its next steps.

The City has previously said it is removing billboards that do not comply with municipal regulations.

A woman’s body has reportedly been found naked with her hands bound on the side of the road in Copesville, Pietermaritzburg.

The body was reportedly discovered by informal recyclers who were collecting cans in the area.

Police have yet to confirm further details surrounding the circumstances of her death.

PENSIONERS DEMAND R5,000 MONTHLY GRANT

Phoenix pensioners have joined a nationwide campaign calling for the Older Persons Grant to increase from R2,400 to R5,000 per month.

They say rising food, electricity, water, transport and medical costs are making it increasingly difficult to survive on the current grant.

SASSA says it does not have the authority to set grant amounts, and the demand will be referred to the Department of Social Development and National Treasury.

MEC RODGERS SUPPORTS SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Francois Rodgers has donated household and gardening equipment to SOS Children’s Village in Grange, Pietermaritzburg.

The donation includes lawnmowers, gardening tools, buckets, mops, brooms and other essential equipment.

Rodgers also committed to sending IT technicians to repair computers at the facility and said he would engage the Department of Agriculture to assist with seedlings for the children’s gardens.
