Young SA canoeists take on the world stage in Portugal

Seven of South Africa’s rising canoe sprint stars are in for a stern challenge this week as they compete against the world’s best paddlers from 65 countries at the ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal.

The five-day event is a prestigious platform for the future of sprint canoeing, featuring 974 junior and U23 athletes aiming to make their mark in this Olympic discipline.

Team South Africa comprises five junior and two U23 paddlers, all of whom will need to elevate their performance if they hope to contest the podium. However, recent successes by World Cup medallist Hamish Lovemore have proven that medals at elite international regattas are not beyond reach.

Race Line-Up

The first South African to hit the water will be junior Jimmy Papadopoulos, who competes in the 200m heats on Wednesday morning (23 July). He will be swiftly followed by Jordan Klopper in the U23 200m heats. Later that day, junior Kayla Szalay faces a challenging double, contesting both the 1 000m and 500m heats. U23 paddler Alexa Godden and junior Cody Stallard will conclude South Africa’s Day 1 campaign in their respective 500m and 1 000m events.

Thursday’s schedule centres around semi-finals, with most Day 1 paddlers expected to return to action. In the afternoon, Godden (200m heats), Stallard (500m heats), and Klopper (500m heats) will take to the water once again before Matthew Wilson and Sbulelo Ngobese partner in the K2 500m event.

Weekend participation for the South African contingent will depend on progression through to the semi-finals and finals. The championships conclude with the gruelling 5 000m mixed relays on Sunday afternoon, where Szalay and Stallard will join forces in the junior race, while Godden and Klopper represent the U23 category.

Tigers roar as hawks take flight in Bazball Sunday showdowns

Sunshine and a buzzing crowd set the perfect tone for Bazball T20 Week 2 at Kloof Country Club on Sunday, where the Hawks and Tigers soared to convincing wins in front of an enthusiastic local turnout.

In the opening game, the Hawks finally broke their winless run in a high-pressure clash against the Jaguars. After electing to bat, they flew out of the blocks with a brisk 71-run opening stand before Matt Parks departed. Brian Vickery anchored the middle overs, and a vital partnership between Zaid Bux and Yusuf Moosa pushed the total to 160. A late-order collapse followed, with Moosa run out in unlucky fashion, but the Hawks still posted a competitive 177 all out from their 20 overs.

The Jaguars came out with intent and looked threatening, especially after Vickery hobbled off injured, leaving the Hawks one bowler down. Sakhil led the fightback with a classy 51 off 39, but Jaguars once again faltered under pressure. Wickets fell at regular intervals and the run rate crept higher, ending their chase at 151/7. The 26-run loss leaves Jaguars still searching for answers on how to close out tight contests.

The afternoon fixture brought fireworks as pre-tournament favourites Tigers faced off against the always-dangerous Toybah. The Tigers were rocked early when Fehim Patel fell for a golden duck, bowled by Kevin Kettle. But a powerful recovery was led by Thauseef Patel’s authoritative 78 and Luc Jacobs’ stylish 42. Just when Toybah hoped for a breakthrough, Fejal Chohan launched a brutal counterattack, smashing 66 off just 28 deliveries to push the Tigers to a daunting 214/5.

Toybah’s bowlers, led by Brandon Wild with figures of 3/41, kept trying, but the total proved too steep. Their reply began cautiously as Talha Motala and Tyrese Daniel struggled against the raw pace of Luc Jacobs, whose thunderbolts lit up the crowd. Mbongeni offered stability, and Ryan Reeves thrilled fans with a clean-hitting 66 off 32, but the effort was in vain as Toybah closed on 155/5—59 runs short.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, spectators soaked in the day’s action, burgers in hand, drinks on ice, and hearts pounding from the thrill of quality club cricket. Bazball Sundays are fast becoming the heartbeat of Durban’s amateur cricket scene.
Catch all the action next weekend at Kloof Country Club. Entry is free, the vibe is electric, and the cricket? Absolutely unmissable.

Siripat Lions tackle litter for Mandela Day

The Reservoir Hills-based Siripat Lions Rugby Club marked Mandela Day by giving back to the community through a beach clean-up along Durban’s shoreline.

Joined by volunteers, including staff from Super Tyres, the team rolled up their sleeves to help restore the beauty of the local coastline. The clean-up was part of their commitment to community upliftment and living out the values that Mandela stood for.

As a token of appreciation, Super Tyres donated ten rugby balls to the club in support of their efforts to develop young talent through sport.

“We are proud to have spent the day meaningfully, helping to clean our beautiful beaches alongside the Siripat Lions, and equally proud to contribute to Madiba’s legacy by supporting the youth who represent the future of our country,” said Dean Horn, Managing Director of Super Tyres.

Joy and Unity in Newlands East

Mandela Day 2025 was marked by heartfelt celebration and community spirit in Newlands East, as Candy Gal Décor, together with dedicated volunteers and generous local sponsors, hosted a memorable event for 40 children at the Candy Gal Décor venue.

The day was filled with laughter, love, and engaging activities aimed at bringing joy and a sense of togetherness. Two fun-filled sessions were held, beginning with a cupcake decorating experience where the little chefs created their own colourful treats. The excitement continued with a variety of games, including playtime in the popular bubble house and jumping castle. Each child received party packs and prizes for their participation, which only added to their delight.

Parents who accompanied their children were also treated to refreshments, cake, hot dogs, and ice cream, making the day enjoyable for all who attended.

“I truly was in awe of the excess and provision from above, which allowed everyone to be included,” said one organiser, reflecting on the spirit of abundance and care that defined the day.
The success of the event was made possible through the generous contributions of local sponsors and the commitment of volunteers who gave their time and energy to ensure everything ran smoothly. It was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose.

This Mandela Day celebration served as a reminder of the lasting legacy of Nelson Mandela—that through compassion, service, and unity, real change is possible.

Candy Gal Décor extends its deepest gratitude to all who made the day a success and looks forward to growing this spirit of giving in future community projects.

Ratepayers make a commitment to the youth for Mandela Day

The Asherville Ratepayers Association (ARA) recently held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Centenary Secondary School, where residents were invited to a formal gathering to review the Association’s performance over the past three years. The meeting was a resounding success, drawing an excellent turnout from the local community.

Dr Annie Singh, who was re-elected as Chairperson for another term, expressed her gratitude to both ARA members and Asherville residents for their commitment to participating in the day’s proceedings.

“I am humbled and delighted to be given the opportunity to serve our cherished community of Asherville as Chairperson, alongside my team of Executive Members and Street Representatives for the next three years.I am deeply touched by the confidence our community has shown in the ARA. As Chairperson, I pledge that our team will remain committed and focused on ensuring our beautiful suburb of Asherville continues to grow and flourish under the capable stewardship of the Association,” said Dr Singh.

The newly elected Executive Committee includes Vanessa Naidoo, Kersari Moodley, Cynthia Singh, Shahistah Gafoor (Secretary), Venodh Naidoo, Sada Naidoo, Ahmed Mehtar, and Deepak Nathoo (Vice Chairperson). Many members of the executive also serve as Street Representatives, demonstrating their dedication to achieving the best outcomes for the Asherville community.

In addition to the formal proceedings, Dr Singh dedicated 67 minutes of her time to engage with the youth in honour of Mandela Day, which commemorates the life and legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela by encouraging acts of service. Mandela Day was first launched in 2008 on Mandela’s 90th birthday, with a call for individuals to spend 67 minutes doing something positive for their communities—symbolising the 67 years Mandela spent fighting for human rights and freedom.

Dr Singh described Mandela as one of the most exemplary leaders in South African history, whose “strength, resilience, determination, and desire to succeed have provided us with a blueprint for how to live our lives.”

Among those present for this meaningful engagement were Deepika Nagdutt, a motivated Grade 10 learner at Centenary Secondary School, and Thomas Khambule, an Information and Communications Technology student at Durban University of Technology (DUT). Both expressed admiration for Dr Singh and the work of the ARA, acknowledging that education, skill, and motivation are key components of a successful and impactful life.
Dr Singh emphasised the importance of investing in the youth, stating:

“It is pivotal that we invest in our youth. As the ARA, we are committed to assisting and empowering the next generation of leaders.”

She concluded by reflecting on Mandela’s legacy: “It took an extraordinary man to teach us a lesson in humility—that every single one of us has the potential to be an agent for change and upliftment in our communities.”

The Asherville Ratepayers Association’s renewed commitment to the youth and the broader community marks a powerful continuation of Mandela’s vision of active citizenship and community development.
