The Coin of Whispers
Ebenezer loved only one sound in the world: the crisp, metallic clink of money meeting more money. He ran a small pawnshop at the edge of town, where he bought family heirlooms for pennies and sold them for fortunes. He ate cold porridge to save on firewood and mended his socks until they were more thread than cloth.
One evening, a desperate young street performer offered Ebenezer a strangely heavy silver coin in exchange for a loaf of bread. The coin bore no face or king, only a swirling, spiral groove that seemed to hum slightly. Ebenezer, sensing pure silver, traded a stale crust of bread and promptly locked the coin inside his iron safe.
That night, Ebenezer was awakened by a soft whisper echoing from the iron box.
"Feed me gold, and I will double it..."
Ebenezer’s eyes snapped wide. He rushed to the safe, unlocked it, and placed a single gold sovereign beside the silver spiral. The spiral glowed faint blue, swallowed the gold coin whole, and promptly spat out two identical sovereigns.
Overwhelmed by ecstasy, Ebenezer didn't sleep. He fed the coin five gold pieces—it returned ten. He fed it fifty—it returned one hundred. By midnight, his small wooden desk was overflowing with shimmering treasure. But the silver coin was growing larger, humming louder, its spiral spinning on its own.
"More," the coin purred, its voice turning heavy and hypnotic. "Give me all of it, and you shall never want again."
Greed completely consumed Ebenezer’s mind. He couldn't stop. He carried every chest of gold, every velvet pouch of jewels, and every copper penny he had hoarded over forty years and dumped them into the silver spiral. The coin expanded until it filled the entire room, turning into a swirling vortex of molten silver and blinding light.
Ebenezer giggled madly, reaching out to touch his infinite wealth.
With a thunderous CLANG, the vortex snapped shut. The room fell pitch black.
When the sun rose the next morning, the pawnshop stood empty. The mountains of gold were gone, and Ebenezer was nowhere to be found. Sitting quietly on the wooden desk was a single, pristine gold coin—and if you placed your ear close enough, you could hear a faint, tiny voice inside it, weeping for his lost porridge.
