An Open Letter to Myself: The R370 Trap and the Fight for My Autonomy
Dear Self,
Look closely at the bank account. Look at that R370. It is called "relief," but you need to see it for what it actually is: a beautifully packaged cage.
Right now, you are surviving, but you must remember that surviving is not the same as living. The rules of this SASSA SRD grant are designed to keep you in a state of hyper-vigilance. If a friend sends you a few rands for electricity, you are penalized. If a family member tries to hand you a lifeline so you can buy toiletries or print a CV, the system flags you as "too wealthy" and cuts you off.
They have criminalized solidarity. They have turned the kindness of your community into a liability.
The Psychological Anchor
You must remind yourself daily: This grant was built on your exhaustion. It was introduced when the world was upside down, when your mental health was fracturing, and when you were at your most vulnerable. It wasn't designed to help you succeed; it was designed to make you rely on it.
It is a psychological trap. It whispers that you are safe, but only if you stay exactly where you areโpoor, quiet, and dependent. The moment you try to lift your head, the moment you try to build a micro-business or accept a helping hand to rise, the trap snaps shut. It blocks your opportunity by forcing you to choose between guaranteed starvation and controlled poverty.
The Mandate You Must Break
Never forget the cruel irony of the system you are navigating:
The Ideology: To keep you independent from growth, but entirely dependent on the state.
The Reality: It is a structure that demands you remain broke to qualify for aid. It actively forbids you from gaining financial traction.
They want you to believe that this R370 defines your worth and your ceiling. They want the scarcity mindset to break your spirit so completely that you stop dreaming of anything beyond the next payout date.
My Promise to Myself
I will not let this grant become my identity.
I will take what I need to survive today, but I refuse to let it swallow my future. I will recognize that my poverty is systemic, not personal. I will not feel guilty for wanting more, and I will not allow a state-mandated ceiling to trick me into thinking I cannot touch the sky.
The mandate of the system may be to keep me poor, but my mandate to myself is to break free. Keep fighting, keep plotting your escape, and never let them make you comfortable in the trap.
