Youth Day: Honour the past by shaping the future

Today, South Africa remembers the brave youth of 1976, who stood up during the Soweto Uprising and paid the ultimate price in the fight for freedom, justice and equality.

Their courage gave future generations a voice. Their sacrifice helped open the doors of democracy. But that freedom must never be taken for granted.

The young people who died fighting for our rights must not have died in vain. One of the most powerful ways we can honour their legacy is by using the rights they fought for — including the right to vote.

As voter registration takes place this weekend, Saturday, 20 June and Sunday, 21 June, we urge every eligible South African, especially the youth, to register and be ready to make their mark.

If we want change in our communities, better leadership, safer streets, jobs, service delivery and accountability, we cannot sit on the sidelines. We must participate.

Register to vote. Use your voice. Use your power. Honour the youth of 1976 by helping shape the South Africa of tomorrow.

Together, let's inspire change, embrace opportunity, and build a better future.

The future is ours. Let's build it together. 🇿🇦

No official 30 June deadline for undocumented immigrants to leave South Africa

As concerns grow ahead of 30 June, government and legal experts have clarified that there is currently no official government deadline requiring undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

Experts have also stressed that the widely circulated R100,000 fine for employers who hire undocumented immigrants is not yet law, as the proposed legislation remains before Parliament.

While employers are still required to verify that foreign nationals have the legal right to work in South Africa, legal commentators are urging the public to rely on verified information rather than rumours circulating on social media.

History was made at the 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon on Sunday 14 June, as both the men’s and women’s winners shattered the Up Run course records in spectacular fashion.

South Africa’s long-distance queen, Gerda Steyn, once again cemented her legendary status by winning the women’s race in a sensational 5:44:53, setting a new Up Run course record and further strengthening her reputation as the “Queen of Comrades.”

Steyn powered through the gruelling route to Pietermaritzburg with determination and composure, conquering the challenging hills and crossing the finish line with her trademark smile. Her performance perfectly embodied the 2026 Comrades theme, “Ska Fela Moya” – Never Lose Hope, Never Give Up.

In the men’s race, George Kusche delivered a masterclass in endurance and strategy to claim victory in an astonishing 5:15:56, breaking the previous Up Run course record. Kusche made an early move from the chasing pack and never looked back, producing one of the most memorable performances in Comrades history.

His victory was the culmination of months of sacrifice, discipline and relentless training, earning him a place among the immortals of the Ultimate Human Race.

The men’s podium was completed by Piet Wiersma, who fought hard to finish second, while KwaZulu-Natal’s own Mbuti Mollo secured an impressive third-place finish.

The 2026 Comrades Marathon will be remembered as one of the most remarkable editions of the iconic race, with both champions rewriting the record books and delivering performances that inspired thousands of runners and supporters lining the route.

2026 Comrades Marathon Winners:
• Men’s Champion: George Kusche – 5:15:56 (New Up Run Course Record)
• Women’s Champion: Gerda Steyn – 5:44:53 (New Up Run Course Record)

The 99th Comrades Marathon once again lived up to its reputation as The Ultimate Human Race, proving that perseverance, resilience and an unbreakable spirit can produce extraordinary achievements.

While thousands of runners prepare for the world-famous Comrades Marathon tomorrow, the National Department of Health is using the event as a powerful platform to promote healthy living, organ donation, and the fight against gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Under the theme “Move for a Healthier You”, health officials have spent the week engaging with runners and supporters at the Comrades Marathon Lifestyle Exhibition at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Visitors to the department’s exhibition stand were able to access free health services, including blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose testing, HIV screening, and body mass index assessments. Information on organ and tissue donation, smoking and va**ng cessation, substance abuse prevention, and disease prevention was also made available.

The campaign will continue on race day when the department sets up a Healthy Lifestyle Activation Water Station at Ashburton, where runners will receive support along the route and spectators will be encouraged to learn more about healthy living.

The department hopes the campaign will inspire more South Africans to get screened regularly, make healthier lifestyle choices, and consider registering as organ donors.

Health officials say the initiative is about more than helping runners cross the finish line. It is also about encouraging South Africans to take positive steps towards healthier lives, stronger communities, and a safer society free from violence and substance abuse.

As runners tackle the gruelling journey between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the department hopes its message will travel just as far — reminding South Africans that good health starts with everyday choices.
